Post by: Mikefrompluto on February 26, 2013, 12:20:16 PM
Any other bike enthusiasts, or even casual riders on here? What's your personal best? The longest ride I've gone on was 45 miles years ago with some friends. Kind of lame hahah. But im hoping to best that this summer.

Any kind! I was referring to bicycles when I was speaking of my personal longest ride, but its applicable to any kind of two wheeled transportation.

I have a carbon-fibre frame Trek racing bike I got as a present. I live in DC, and have the Capitol Crescent trail behind my house. I bike everywhere! My bike is so light, I can lift it with 2 fingers. Carbon fibre bikes, while expensive, are the way to go.

Nice! My friend has carbon fibre Jamis and that's the best bike I've ever ridden. Im currently riding a Schwinn aluminum Tourist. It's pretty basic but i picked it up for $15 at my work. I really want to find an old frame and restore it and put a flip-flop hub on it to switch from fixie to single gear.

My city isn't as biker friendly as i imagine DC to be. I constantly get yelled at to get on the sidewalk on my commute to work, even though its illegal to ride on the sidewalk if youre over 15.

It's been so long since I've ridden a bike :o. I rode everywhere when I was a kid, and now I couldn't even tell you what bike I had 
I ended up picking up just walking and listening to music eventually . I may have to look into a bike when I get some money.

You won't regret it! It's great exercise, and is good for clearing your head. Just pick an album or two and GO!

As for odometer, I have one of the Nike + Tom Tom watches that tracks how far I go, how long it takes, etc.

Can you keep time without a metronome?

I was way into biking last year and was doing 14 miles a day with a 25-50 mile ride on the weekends... And then my knee started popping whenever I rode and I had to switch to running in my five fingers. Meanwhile, my 66 year old grandpa can ride for a 100 miles and rode over 4000 miles last year...I'm 16 and he can ride twice as far as I can (-_-)

No but i can keep rhythm with no metronome, and am fairly good at keeping time without a clock. However metronomes and time are in somewhat different categories as far as purpose is concerned o.o

Damn my literalness sometimes

Man that event sounds like fun. Hmm now want to start riding again and get back up to speed. Anyone know what might cause the knee to pop? (Similar to cracking your knuckles but ten times as painful)

I would get it checked out by a doctor, who would possibly recommend a physiotherapist

I concur. You're young, and its worth spending the time and money getting it checked out right now instead of ignoring it and having more serious problems later on in life.

I've had knee problems ever since I was 18 (im 25 now, and I've dislocated it four times over the years,) and the doctor gave me exercises to do whenever it acts up.

Hmm..I think you guys are right about going to the doc to get some information about it. Thanks for the feedback.

The longest ride I ever did was only 15miles but it was in Italy so I call that a big win no matter what

I don't know my longest but I know my fastest (on a straight, level road, no tailwind) was 48.8km/h

Edit: translates to about 30.3 mph

It's not very far, but I know I've ridden around Makinac Island on the norther tip of Michigan probably 3 or 4 times. It's only like 12 miles though.  I think.  Maybe it's less.  Or is it more?  Either way, it's no italy!
