Title: W/B Sacrifice/Sorin
Post by: Greymind on February 13, 2012, 12:25:10 PM
I am looking for some guidance here fellow planeswalkers. I've been playing for about 6 months now with a solid group and enjoying the hell out of it. While we started casual, we moved to standard due to everyone showing up with crazy combos and banned cards. I find standard even more fun due to the limitations imposed on deck building. There's only one hitch with this new hobby: I'm tired of second place.

Out of our group of 10, I was always demolishing unless I played Rei The White.
He always goes U/W, and is very control orientated - never swinging unless he can keep his life total and weenies untouched. He gets me damn near every game, and it's apparent in his conversation and interaction he feels pretty secure on his throne. He is the only one of us who has had previous MtG experience, yet even though we all feel we understand the rules and intricacies as well as he, none of us seem to be able to close that gap.

Here's where you guys come in (hopefully).
I bought a booster box, and pulled 3 {Sorin, Lord of Innistrad} and a plethora of nice W/B cards. I need help collaborating on this to come up with a deck before this Friday. I would LIKE to keep it W/B and sacrifice themed. But of course the goal here is to take down Rei the White. I am open to any and all criticism, just add something helpful afterwards so we arent wasting anyone's time.

Thanks in advance guys. Help an ambitious planeswalker out :)

Extra Intel: last Friday he ran a U/W control that themes around {Oblivion Ring}s and that god damned Venser. He was blinking his rings in and out basically turning any card he wanted inactive, until Venser had a couple "emblems" and I was screwed.

I built a deck that uses thraben doomsayer human tokens to sac for archdemon of greed. If you wanna get token friendly, add some intangible virtues. Vault of the archangel would be a plus too, since it's activated ability gives your creatures lifelink & deathtouch until end of turn. You can always o-ring his Venser and naturalize or ray of revelation his o-rings.

Also look into Sudden Disappearance. It exiles all nonland permanents a player controls until end of turn. That would also reset Venser's counters.

Yeah, but it's 6 to cast for an effect that may not really win the game.

Is this for Multiplayer or 1v1?

1vs1. We usually end the night in one or two giant multiplayers.

Lucky right? At first I was bummed because I got zero Huntmasters and Immerwolfs and only Helvault as the other mythic, but it dosent look like a werewolf deck would be as competitive as id like and to boot I pulled 3 of the 5 Sorins out of 10+ people so I can't complain.

3x{Sorin, Lord of Innistrad} > $ of one booster box.

I like the cut of your jib.  I could offer you silver bullets for multiplayer, I'm like Fezzik, i'm best at taking on groups for local charities, not so much 1 on 1.

That being said, nerf that mofo's O-rings with hexproof {Invisible Stalker}s or similar.  Or just burninate his face with RDW.  That's my answer to control, be uncontrollable.  ;)

Are you wanted to build your deck from just Dark Ascension? Or do you have a nice selection of Standard cards (SoM, M12 & Inn)?

{Skirsdag Flayer}
{Disciple of Grislebrand}
{Elder Cathar}
{Mausoleum Guard}
{Doomed Traveler}
{Bitterheart Witch}
{Unruly Mob}
{Villiage Cannibals}
{Thraben Doomsayer}
{Gather the Townsfolk}
{Increasing Devotion}
{Champion of the Parish}
{Faulkenrath Torturer}
{Ravenous Demon}
... Just look at all that juicy cohesion!!! And this is just off the top of my head! I can't wait!!!
Here's a suggestion I made a while back, then throw in {Intangible Virtue}, {Unburial Rites}, {Unholy Death}, {Bonehoard}, {Traveller's Amulet} to help with casting a {Sudden Disappearance} and followed by {Sundial of the Infinite}, then you may chuck in {Razorverge Thicket} to be able to cast {Parralell Lives} to help the few token gens possible in 🌟ðŸ'€, or {Fresh Meat} after a {Phyrexian Rebirth} or {Life's Finale}.

Hope this gave you some helps ... man I love Orzhovian Decks!

I love every suggestion after Thicket. I don't quite understand the ultimate end goal with sundial of the infinite.

I will put up my deck later today. I have a nice selection of all current standard cards so tht shouldn't be an issue.

As for the thickets and splashing green (definitely want to, parallel lives ftw) what is the new ratio of green cards to thickets? I.e how many thickets should I trade out, and with that new number how many cards get swapped for green?

Like I said I will put the deck list up later, but as of now it's x4 chapel, x4 vault of the archangel with B/W rounding out 22 tot

If you activate the sundial at the right time after you exile all their permanents then all their stuff is gone forever.

Thanks. I am assuming you would play it after Sudden has resolved. Although it makes me want to ask, why wouldn't sundial just phase all his stuff back as a result of "resolves all end of turn effects"?

Some cards have wording that says "return at the end of next turn" and some have say "end of turn". For {sudden disappearance} it has a trigger that goes on the stack at the beginning of the <u>next end step</u>.  That means it only tries once to bring everything back. You wait for the resolving to go on the stack and tap the sundial in response.

The same idea applies to {seance} and the tokens for {Geist of saint Traft}. It does not apply to effects from things like {vault of the archangel}.those go away no matter what.

Ahh, thanks for the clarification Cll. Basically you are throwing down "end turn now" on top of the triggered "hey it's end step lets get these guys back".

Very cool.

K , run all the token makers 4 midnight haunting , lingering souls, and gather the townsfolk than run 4 honor the pure and 4 intangible vertue.  And add you sorins and if you got any of the vault land, run 2. Only Run black for the lingerings and for sorin. That should make you hard to beat.

Taken aboard Sin. Before I post my initial deck are there any objections to his suggestion? Meaning I am about to cleanse all the skirsdag/torturer creatures that benefit saccing and mainly go white weenie with B for Sorin and B removal.

That's 20, Sorin makes 23.
Ok, this is going to seem pretty plain but at lease we have a direction now.

So far:
Land x 24

{Swamp}x5
{Plains}x15
{Isolated Chapel}x4

Spells x20
________________________
{Midnight Haunting}x4
{Lingering Souls}x4
{Gather the Townsfolk}x4
{Honor of the Pure}x4
{Intangible Virtue}x4

Creatures

Ok from here: How do we round this out to 60, and am I making the best use of my mana mix?

What's the hotness on black cheap removal? How do you guys feel about {tragic slip}? I like the card but I've gotten mixed reviews from more experienced players.

How about {Altar's Reap}? I know we are moving away from saccing, but with all these low CMC cards I am suspecting we will need card income.

EDIT: too many replies to myself. New question - how viable is plugging in that {Sundial of the Infinite} combo that's raging in the combo corner? Its super tempting, but I am apt to let my plans get too big for my brain.

I dont recommend running the sundial combo unless you design you deck around it. {altars reap} is good for if you have tons of guys out and are sure they won't wipe the board any time soon.

Gotten a ton of help so far. The end result is a sacrifice-less deck. I am on my way to the cardshop now to pick up what I need to finish it. Thanks for the help everyone, including those of you modest PM'ers.

Will post the finished deck here soon along with updating the OP.
