Title: Too competitive
Post by: izik99 on February 05, 2013, 05:38:15 PM
My friend is super competitive, and since its not fun playing like that, I got him too make an EDH, so its more casual. He immediately sways towards arguably the most competitive commander possible: {Zur, the Enchanter}. So here's my point of view: I want to play fun, social, casual games with him. He just wants to win a lot, he's that kind of person. I'm playing {Animar, Soul of the Elements}. What commander (preferably black, he likes Sorin Markov A LOT) could he play that would be good enough he could win, but not so good that he overwhelms me and wins every game?

{Kaalia of the Vast} maybe? Aggressive and competitive, yet not unbeatable. And contains black.

Another option is to shut down his Zur deck. Force him out of it. Load your deck with low mana tuck spells, like {Spell Crumple}, {Hinder}, and {Spin Into Myth}. Most Zur decks have practically no other creatures, and shut down completely to a library-tuck.

{void stalker} and {Proteus Staff} would also work.

My cousin gets like that sometimes...

My advice if you steer him towards Kaalia is similar to Gorzo. Focus on shutting his commander down early and you should be good to go.

But you can easily make Animar crazy fast. You can add some control and extra counter to deal with him. Once he looses a few games without you putting much thought into it, maybe then he will realize it and stop.

BTW...these might help you with him:  {Chaos Warp},  {Beast Within}, and the new  {Rapid Hybridization}. Easy low drops to slow any commander. I also like these for Animar cause they boost him while still removing a commander;  {Phyrexian Metamorph} and  {Phantasmal Image}.

I got him to play {Skullbriar}, he really likes that. The problem I had with Zur is that he was going to give it shroud with the first enchantment, and unblockable with the next, and then pumps. But all is good, he likes aggro, so he chose {Skullbriar}.
