Title: Opinion on other formats
Post by: Quisequise on February 04, 2013, 12:57:03 PM
I started playing magic in 1998, and then took a huge break and didnt start playing again until 2012. My question is should I even try to play legacy or modern or just stick with standard? *also only had a few older cards none that great*

Modern and legacy are expensive in the beginning, standard is a constant shelling out of money with every new set. So in the long run standard is more expensive but modern/legacy kind of require an immediate large stack of money if you want to start playing right away. So I'd say do whatever sounds less painful in the wallet xD

Legacy doesnt necessarily have to be expensive. You can substitute the expensive staples for cheaper cards that more or less do the same thing. Example. {Daze} if you don't have the $40 to shell out for a single {force of will}. Modern's banned list is too restrictive for me. There's also always casual if you feel like you won't be competing much in tournaments anyways.

Yes you can substitute (which I do) I just ment for cookie cutting modern/legacy decks that are competitive.

I like modern and legacy more because it isnt constantly changing.  You can buy bits and pieces of a deck over a period of time and not have to worry about finishing it before the set rotates.  Standard feels too rushed for a limited salary.  And besides, why limit yourself to only a handful of sets?  I like the possibilities in modern and legacy.  Soooo much to choose from! :D

It all depends on what you want to do. If you want to play competitively then it's going to cost you in any format, more upfront in modern or legacy. If you want to play for fun then it doesn't matter. Drafts are always good to play bc everyone in a sense is on the same playing field and you can win packs and whatnot.

Yeah that's true.

Legacy is a better investment. Standard prices plummet off the face of the earth when those cards rotate. Occasionally standard prints a multi-format all-star (ie. {Snapcaster Mage},  {Tarmogoyf}) but things like {Bonfire of the Damned} which is $20 now, isn't really in Legacy.

The original dual lands aren't going to be reprinted, and they aren't going to lose value. They're not "required" to play legacy either. Shocklands and M10 Taplands are perfectly suitable replacements. Fetchlands may one day be reprinted.

Standard is a money sink, if you aren't competing for cash prizes then it's hard to justify a playset of {Sphinx's Revelation} and {Geist of Saint Traft}, because they may not be worth half that price upon rotation.

I'm not too worried about cost, I was looking at it from the standpoint that since I stopped playing and collecting cards for 15 years, would it even be worth it to try and start making a deck for legacy or modern. Like am I too far behind to make something competitive.

If you don't want to compete, play Legacy. Modern is just a lesser form of Legacy, with cards that aren't on the reserve list and an insane banned list.

EDH is a fun format for casual multiplayer. The decks take on a life of their own. If socializing and .politics. are your bag, it's the format for you.

I was actually just going to ask about EDH Dudecore. When I started playing last year it was a format that caught my eye.

EDH is the way to go- I started with standard after a break, and didn't like it very much. Its too predictable. In EDH, each game is different and interesting, plus it is not very expensive :D
