It's definitely powerful for it's power and toughness being equivalent to its casting cost, also it's evasive being that sorcery speed removal won't be able to do anything to it. The turn you swing with him is already 9 damage, assuming you hit the opponent with the 5 damage. Your also staying in the game with the 2 points of life gained each turn. He's very powerful, but he can still be dealt with. He is the strongest of this set I believe.

He's good but only because of innistrad. In innistrad they have so many flickers it's unreal, that includes {restoration angel} and {cloud shift} also with {unburial rites} it will just get resurrected. With a good enough control deck it will be so difficult to get rid of, especially since it exiles itself at the end of turn.

He also can't be the subject of the legend rule.
He leaves play so even I ur opponent casts one it will be gone at the end of their turn and urs will come back into play.  Just an awesome bonus for this guy. So instant speed removal is pretty much the only option.

The exile isn't mandatory

Did some playing with Obzedat on cockatrice and I honestly thought he was phenomenal!  There's just a lot of damage-dealing potential there.  And it is really nice to have the option to either deal a little more damage or give yourself a blocker.  Options are always nice.

RDW doesn't have a whole lot of 5 damage removal for him.  In Orzhov, there is plenty of removal for Thundermaw ({Ultimate Price}, {Murder}, even things like the reprint of {Iona's Judgment} that has a different name that I can't remember :P ).  And then you throw in {Blind Obedience} for the RDWs, or, like myself, use him in an esper deck and you've got {Syncopate}s and such to keep key creatures off the field.

I don't know, I just think Obzedat is super good.  Maybe a bit overhyped, but not extremely.

I am aggresively trading my  {Obzedat, Ghost Council}s that I pull (2 so far) because I know when people actually get to play with them, they'll see how bad it is. It's really bad.

How in the world is that card bad? You're playing it wrong, that card is amazing, I'm sorry. The mana cost is just right, and he's a beatstick.

As am I. 2 drain every turn, plus 5 combat damage (it has haste) seems good to me. 7 total damage every turn, plus 2 life gain. And if they block it, chances are the creature won't stand up to the assault

Personally, I think naya is better since they have thragtusk for blocks and life gain and the beats of Boros, thundermaw, and maybe some hellrider-token action. Obzedat is nice, but he needs to hit three times to wipe out thragtusk life gain.
Title: Re: Obzedet, ghost council
Post by: Coffee Vampire on February 03, 2013, 10:11:19 PM
Thrag is a 5 life swing upon etb, and obzedat is a 4 life swing upon etb. So it would just take 2 turns for Obzedat to do as well as swagtusk in terms of putting your life above your opponent's.

That being said I still agree with you though...naya gets all the toys lol

Fair enough, though a well timed skull crack would mess them up, especially if they are looking for restoration shenanigans

Can't argue with that...skullcrack is da boss to end all midrange decks.

I pulled 2 {Obzedat, Ghost Council}. I'm trying to trade them. Not because it's not great, because it isn't the type of card I'd run. I don't currently see a deck it fits into. It dodges sorceries and enchantment, but doesn't swing. I don't know if I'd pay 5 for a card with rebound that deals 2 and I gain 2.

The jury is still out, but so far it seems pretty righteous.

I'll update it soon. I basically all but quit standard, I gotta wait for the meta to shake out.
I would trade it for a foil {Godless Shrine} and some EDH stuff. Basically foil copies from my Dromar EDH deck. (http://imtgapp.com/forum/index.php?topic=17406.0)

Do you mean that in most situations you would not want to swing with him? Because he can swing as he is given haste after coming back from exile.

You can swing with it, but it's a 5/5 without evasion, so I feel like it trades with most creatures for 5 mana cost. {Thragtusk},  {Thundermaw Hellkite}, various {Silverblade Paladin} bonded dudes. I don't feel like I'm attacking profitably with it, but in certain situations it does work.

Edit: At worst, someone chumps it with a 1/1, {Geralf's Messenger}, ect then morbid into a {Brimstone Volley} or {Tragic Slip}. I'm not saying its a bad card, I am just gonna let it play out. It's neither "OMGWTFban! or "This is Gideon bad". We've had the card for 3 days.

Yeah that's what I thought you meant. You are right, a lot of people won't be swinging with it. And it limits your use of boardwipes. But that is about as far as drawbacks go.
