Title: Redirect, Syncopate
Post by: Juggalonoke on January 31, 2013, 04:35:44 AM
Can I  {Redirect} a  {Syncopate} to target the counter itself?

I believe so. It's a spell on the stack, so it's a valid target I'd say.

You might collapse the multiverse with a "divide by 0" type situation though.

You cannot have the syncopate target itself, as counterspells can never target themselves. You can, however, make it target the {Redirect} while its on the stack.

And here's the ruling, from the Comprehensive Rules:

114.4. A spell or ability on the stack is an illegal target for itself.

+1

Unfortunately, changing target to the {Redirect} itself isn't an option, either...

You choose the new target for {Syncopate} upon resolution of Redirect. At that point, Redirect is no longer on the stack, therefore impossible to target. Because you couldn't choose until resolution, you must select a different target.

Unless there was another spell on the stack besides Syncopate and its original target, you have to just save your Redirect and let your spell get countered.

Wrong you choose the target when cast the spell. Look it up in the ruling of {redirect}.

You can choose {redirect} as a legal target. It resolves, leaving nothing on the stack to be countered, counter spell fizzles as a SBA.

Wow. I stand corrected. Strange, that seems counterintuitive, but yeah, it's in the rulings...

Re-edit, Keyeto?

And done! Hopefully for the last time lol

Aha! I stand corrected. I actually did not know that one! I learned something today! +1 for reminding me there's always more to learn.

My apologies for giving an incorrect answer ;)

Both situations are covered on the rulings of redirect. I highly recomend getting the rulings, or just "buy it all". Looking at the rulings has always helped me double check answers. Luv dem rulings :)
