Okay that sounds pretty freaking awesome. I'm going to have get no sleep that weekend either, aren't I?
Does it mean that you choose two guilds?
Their like a good crack dealer trying to sell you the next high before the last one's done. It looks pretty sweet to me.
That look's awesome
Am I the only one who is genuinely excited about their treatment of the lands?

This is so true. I can 100% without a shadow of a doubt say that I am legitimately addicted to Magic: the Gathering. It's just not fair, it's an incredible game with near infinite possibilities.

When is this? I didnt see it said
I'm so excited for dragons maze that I'm literally talking about it to myself!
I think I'll be buying my first ever box.
All 10 shock lands and probably some boss mythic rares. Going to be INSANE!
It's really sad that I'm tempted to do the triple pre-release again. But it's just too much.. I don't think I've ever been so exhausted as I was after doing 3 GateCrash prereleases in 1 weekend. I'm going to have to limit myself for dragon's maze.

I found 3 in a row exhausting. Near the end of the second one which was midnight i was snoozing inbetween turns.
Yeah, it was really rough. Somehow I did terrible on the first two and won 1st on night 3 though, so it worked out :P yay for boros playing itself while I sleep at the wheel!
I am probably gonna have to go to all 4 of the prereleases lol. I can never choose my guild. So why not pick all 4 of my favorite. Izzet, gruul, rakdos and BOROS!!!!!
I'm planning on going to all 5 that my LGS offers. It's tough and exhausting but very enjoyable. After finishing in top 8 the 32 at the Gatecrash release I think I'm getting better at this limited style.
Okay so I know I'm going to one prerelease with izzet/gruul and I know I'm going to the other with orzhov, what secret ally would you guys suggest for the second?

You do realize you don't choose your second guild right? You choose one and have a pack for another guild that you get randomly, the only certain is it's from the other set and shares a color. So for every guild there are 4 possibilities. Say azorius, possibilities are orzhov, dimir, boros or simic.
I am going for selesnya:)
I heard that 1 in 22 packs will have a shockland

That's what I get for only going to mythicspoiler
So what about gruul for one and golgari for the other?
You will get a random guild ally that shares a color with your guild, but is in the opposite set (GtC or RtR) of your own guild.
So for example, Gruul is from Gatecrash. It will get a guild from RtR as its' ally, that shares either red (Izzet, Rakdos) or green (Selesnya, Golgari). Gruul cannot get Azorious as an ally.
Golgari will get an ally from GateCrash that shares either green (Gruul, Simic) or black (Orzhov, Dimir). Golgari cannot get Boros as its ally.
The guild pack will say on the backside what ally guild it has in it.
Anybody plan on doing a midnight release?

Ok so this is my first sealed deck prerelease and i was wondering about basic lands. Do we bring our own or are they generally provided?

Ok so this is my first sealed deck prerelease and i was wondering about basic lands. Do we bring our own or are they generally provided?
They are usually provided. Many players still choose to bring their own land for a couple of reasons, though.
I bring my own land myself for 2 reasons.
1) it's convenient to not have to get up after building your deck to sleeve and do some sample draws. I like to get into the zone, and use every bit of that pre-game time to test and think about my deck, and being able to be lazy and stay put gives me a couple extra sample draws worth of time. I also save some hassle at the end of the night, when I can toss my deck in my backpack and go without needing to sort out the lands, de-sleeve them all, and return them.
2) if for some reason I/you want to play without sleeves, using borrowed lands, which have seen as much play as my ex girlfriend, in a deck with brand new cards, which are so crisp that they literally just came out of the pack 30 seconds ago, can create a "marked card" issue.
Edit: I know I've rambled on a bit too long already here, but just wanted to add: if you bring your own land, you'll only need to bring 17 of each color. A limited format 40-card is typically highly recommended to contain 17 land. So bringing 17 of each assures you have enough for any deck, even if you manage to pull off a mono-color deck with 0 non-basic lands (which is essentially impossible to accomplish in Dragon's Maze - bringing 10 of each color is probably quite safe.)
Thank you for a well detailed explanation. I guess ill bring my own land for the convinience and not having to bother at the end of the night.

With the new non-basic land slot, the fact that shock lands can fill that spot OR the regular rare slot, and the fact that this is a smaller set, that statistic just can't possibly be accurate.

Omg that would suck cuz that makes no sence
There are way to few Cards in the set for that to be right
And I need more shocklands so I hope that's wrong
Then buy GTC and RtR. Or let me open your packs, i have good shockland ratio

would you rather shocklands drop drastically in value? Or only a little? The way there doing it would make the latter happen. Printing them more often then that would cause the former to happen

Id love for the value of shocks to drop...
Shock ratio in the packs seems low, I pulled one but a lot of people didn't. Love the pins though, the maze was eh as a party favor deal

Prepare to be hero'ed!
Just got home from an awesome prerelease! And I'm proud to say I took 1st place! IMtG represent!
Here's what I can tell you based on what I played with and against.
I played Rakdos. My ally was Dimir. I'll be honest, my Dimir cards were absolute garbage. I used a total of 4 GateCrash cards in my deck, and cut blue entirely.
My Rakdos pack:
{Chaos Imps}
{Rix Maadi Guildmage}
{Rakdos Shred Freak}
{Deviant Glee}
{Grim Roustabout}
{Bellows Lizard}
{Annihilating Fire}
{Ultimate Price}
{Rakdos Guildgate}
+ some crap I didn't use
My Dimir Pack:
{Grisly Spectacle}
{Wight of Precinct Six}
{Midnight Recovery}
{Dimir Guildgate}
+ unusable garbage
You guys know these cards so no comments. But here come the Maze cards, I'll comment on each one.
{Carnage Gladiator} - MVP. No question. This guy singlehandedly won me games. He is the absolute embodiment of everything that Rakdos stands for.
{Rubblebelt Maaka} x2 - I love these guys. I never once used them as a creature. They are a brutal, uncounterable, red {giant growth} and should be seen as such. Not only could I cause many dead blockers with this trick, but the +3 for lethal happened pretty often, and it got to the point where I could easily bluff them and get away with attacking my 2/1's into enemy 2/4's to hear 'sigh...no blockers."
{Maze Abomination} - so-so finisher card. He is a very big deal if you have a lot of multicolored creatures on the field, but has surprisingly little impact for a six drop if not. Still, even by himself, his 5 toughness allows you to swing with him pretty willy-nilly, knowing any blocks against him will likely favor you, and no blocks is 4 damage.
{Armed // Dangerous} - Armed is a blowout if you get an opportunity to use it. Even at sorcery speed, armed is a huge impact. Sadly, even though I got and included a {Golgari Guildgate} just for this one fuse card, I was never able to cast Dangerous with it.
{Ubul Sar Gatekeepers} - if you have the gates, these fellas are pretty good. If not, a vanilla 2/4 for 4 is pretty underwhelming.
{Rakdos Drake} (foil!) - Love this little fella. It's 3 toughness when unleashed makes it a pretty serious pain to deal with. It's 2 power allows it to deal notable damage, or kill most flyers in the set should they dare to block.
{Hired Torturer} - I originally added this guy to my deck not noticing he was a defender. I left him in after I realized he's pretty damn good even if I can't swing with him. He's a solid blocker at 2/3, and his ability proved more useful than I expected, allowing me to turn extra mana that I save for regeneration into 2 damage and a free random peek at my opponent 's hand. His ability to deal damage (or rather "loss of life") without having to attack/get by blockers made him a solid finisher in games against blocker-heavy decks like orzhov.
{Blood Scrivener} - I was honestly pretty disappointed here. I never used the effect - this thing ended up being nothing but a 2/1 for 2 with a target on it's head when my hand size got low. I got much more use out of {Rakdos Shred-Freak}, which ended up being effectively the same card + haste.
{Riot Piker} - I gotta say, I like this goblin. Sure, it attacks each turn if able because goblins are stupid, but 2 power and first strike made that okay for quite a few attacks. Slap {Deviant Glee} on there, and you have one happy goblin, for an extremely low mana cost.
{Showstopper} - highly disappointing. Was essentially a dead card for me. There was never a situation where I would have preferred to spend 3 mana to do this over playing another card in my hand or spending that mana to regenerate a creature.
{Far // Away} - I. Love. This. Card. I had 2 Dimir guild gates as my only blue sources, and quite frankly I didn't care, because Away by itself is good enough to be in this deck without a second thought. But if I did have one if those blues? Far and Away fused is a blowout. It has it all - tempo wrecking, removal, opening the path for my attackers...this was one of my favorite cards to see during that draw step.
And that 's my deck. Solid Rakdos, got me to a win. So what impressions did I get of the guilds in general?
{Rakdos} - obviously I love it, and I did well with it, but the other players playing Rakdos all did pretty well, too, including 4th place and (i think) 7th. It seems like a solid, steady agro guild with enough tricks up its sleeves to make the game more interesting, and to tip the scales in Rakdos' favor.
{Golgari} - I sadly can't say much as I didn't play against any true Golgari. I can say that the 2/5 deathtouch gorgon is amazing, though. It seemed pretty middle-of-the-pack.
{Selesnya} - pretty frightening. Had me on edge all night. The white blockers and available tokens to Selesnya can really mess up and slow down a deck like mine. God help you if you see {Advent of the Wurm} - you're doomed. There is a pretty big lack of populate though - with only one pack of RTR cards (the guild pack), and not much populate in dragon's maze itself, this very crucial keyword kind of..,fades away and you don't see much of it.
{Azorious} - Azorious did quite poorly, I'm afraid. 2nd to last place on the maze (which has progress based on # of wins). Unfortunately that's about all I can tell you - we were on opposite sides of the room from each other, so I didn't exactly see much of it.
{izzet} - much like it was in RTR, izzet was hit or miss. One izzet player came in either 3rd or 5th, and very well may have gotten 1st if he hadn't gotten mana screwed against me - I was his only loss of the night. Izzet is full of potential, able to get insane red creatures of Rakdos, Gruul, and Boros, and the substantial blue support found in Azorious, Dimir, and occasionally in Simic. But you need to get luck and get those cards - because without them, izzet's own cards do very little.
{Boros} - as expected, more people played boros than any other guild. Because of this, Boros won the special "Maze Race" event in the background, giving them all some sort sort of online achievement thingy. The guild itself seems a little less crazy than it did in GateCrash - slowed down from it's super speed. Still very good, but not as dauntingly overpowered as it was at gtc sealed.
{Gruul} - I think I'm starting to really love these savages. Their creatures are pretty solid, and their level of aggression keeps pace with most of the other guilds pretty easily. But what makes Gruul so truly good is how well they play with other guilds. Bloodrush is incredible, and any guild with red or green that turns creatures sideways and attacks wants to have some Gruul with them! Many of the top decks used Gruul cards, including my own. The Druid that taps for {G} and deals 1 damage to a player is quite a good card, too.
{Simic} - dead last. I don't know what it is about Simic, but it fails horribly at sealed. Just...don't play it. It'll be fine in draft, but avoid it like the plague at this prerelease.
{Dimir} - didn't do so well, either. While Dimir does have the possibility to open a very good, very complicated sealed deck, it doesn't appear likely. I cut Dimir from my deck like it were a tumor - and I'm glad I did.
{Orzhov} - last but not least, the thorn in my side. Orzhov just as obnoxious as ever. It is less likely to have as much extort as before (see ramblings on populate above), it still gets enough to be a problem. On top of that, it gets a few new blockers, a few new combat tricks, and everything else you need to mess with an aggressive opponent like myself.
Hopefully all of this is helpful to someone! Hope all of you have as much fun as I did last night! Now, I've been up all night. Time to check a few more posts and pass out!
You are the man! Gratz on the win! What was the prize payout? How many showed for the release?
Just shy of a box (30 packs) because the turnout was a bit lighter than expected - only about 50 people. There were closer to 80 at the GateCrash prerelease.

Really? Do the guild packs show which random ally is on the inside? Or maybe they just removed the ally packs from the guild packs and made their own, idk.
Walked out with 2 Obzedat Aid and Ral'Zarek.
Picked Boros, got paired with Rakdos, built an Esper deck....went 2-2. Long night.

it shows on the back of the guild pack.
Yeah, we got to pick. My friend went Boros/Rakdos and I went Rakdos/Gruul.
How did you do? What ended up dominating?
I got terrible pulls ({Havoc Festival}? Really?) and I ended up using Jund. Rakdos beat out the other guilds by far. Granted, there were like 4 or 5 rakdos players out of the ~20 that were there. I went 2-2 and placed 8th.
My friend went {R}{W}{B} and got 7th. I don't remember how many he won/lost though.

That one seems like it would've been a limited bomb! :o I know I got an {Act of Treason} and it did incredible. And my friend beat me a couple times with those stupid red gate guys that let you steal a creature.
Speaking of limited bombs, I played against a guy who pulled 2 {Advent of the Wurm}s and he used a {Give // Take} on it. 8/8 tramplers are not an easy thing to deal with with limited resources :P
Edit: {Traitorous Instinct}, not {Act of Treason}
With my luck, I'll pull a {Maze's End} in one of my actual packs.

I DID pull {Maze's End} in one of my actual packs... Sigh
Went 3-1 with rakdos/gruul. Lost the one match to bad draws. Got very lucky with my pulls {Dreadbore} , {Putrefy}, and {Auger Spree}. The removal alone let all my haste creatures roll right in. Was a good night and placed top 8 out of 40. Cant wait for theros pre-release.
Participated in my first prerelease tonight I choose Gruul as my guild and my other guild I was paired with was Selesnya and took 11 out of 32 yielding 2 prize boosters
Notable cards I pulled and played with in prerelease are
{Unflinching Courage} probably one of my greatest assets especially having this on {Centaur Healer} and then using armed (see below)
2 {Armed // Dangerous} - mainly used it for armed, only one time did I have enough mana to use both armed and dangerous. it works extremlywell when you have lifelink.
{Skylasher} was probably my favorite creature I pulled Especially throwing unflinching courage on it and hitting them with armed
{Wayfaring Temple} you are familer with this creature probably
{Blaze Commando} he was just a good creature for me and didn't really use the ability
{Zhur-Taa Druid} great for the mana and the 1 damage very solid card
{Advent of the Wurm} everything you ever thought about this card is true
Foil {Flesh // Blood} this card ended helped me end games only once did I get to use bothe flesh and blood mainly used it for blood
{Warleader's Helix} is a great card lifegain plus removal or straight damage is solid
{Gruul War Chant} a huge asset especially if its out by turn 4
{Exava, Rakdos Blood Witch} I splashed black to run her because she was my only champion I pulled I got her out twice and WOW she is good especially if you can unleash her and then put unflinching courage on her and then doing an armed ended a game for me
Those are all my notable pulls from my deck I also pulled a {Ral Zarek} but didn't use him
My prize packs I got a {Reap Intellect} and a {Ready // Willing}
Came so, so close to clinching 2 first place prereleases in a row tonight. I only lost one match this time, and I didn't lose to my opponent, I lost to epic mana screw. Even my opponent was disappointed that I got mana screwed. We played for fun after, and my deck (once it got land) crushed him. He went on to take 1st, with a very solid orzhov/Azorious deck.
I had fun though, and still took 4th place out of just under 50 (I think there were 48?). I picked Rakdos again, and laughed when I saw I was paired with Dimir again. I played my Dimir cards this time, however, as I pulled {Lazav, Dimir Mastermind}, {Deathcult Rogue}, and {Gridlock}. Gridlock + Rakdos = game over. My Rakdos pack gave me {Desecration demon}, who I saw twice the entire night, and some goodies like {Guttersnipe} and {Gorehouse Chainwalker} then my dragon's maze come along and say "Hey, we like you. Have this {Exava, Rakdos Blood Witch}, {Turn // Burn}, and all sorts of on-color removal and tricks!" It was a crazy deck, I had a ton of fun tonight.
Tomorrow: something different. I try Golgari. Fingers crossed for Scar-Striped and a bunch if those 2/5 gorgon ladies! I am really enjoying this prerelease!
I'm going to have a pretty hard time then i guess, my prereleases have over 100 people.

After reading this, I'm really hoping that someone backed out of my prerelease for today. I couldn't make the other ones and when I signed up there was only azorius and izzet available. I took my chances weigh azorius hoping get paired with Orzhov. We'll see, but I really want to play Rakdos now!!
How did everyone do??
2-2-1 with a pretty rough pool of cards. I pick selsyna and got paired with orzohov. I got decent removal but hardly drew enough of it. I ended up having to splash blue because quality of creatures was crap. I had a great time though.
I did decent in the first PreRelease, went 3-2 after going Rakdos, got Boros as an ally. Insanity happened later that night though. My girlfriend and I decided to play 2HG, I went Boros and she went Rakdos. This is the most disgusting thing ever, we're handed our guild packs and lo-and-behold! Both of them contain Rakdos/Boros. As in we got 2 Rakdos guild packs and 2 Boros. Our decks were so insanely aggressive it wasn't even funny. The fact that both players trigger Batallion also is just gross. Haha, {Skull Rend} is MVP in 2HG 😂
Moral of the story is we took first, and beat the two reigning 2HG champions.
I chose selesnya and got paired with orzhov. I had a decent card pool, but no bombs really in any color. I did however get 7 guild gates, {Transguild Promenade} and 8 clue stones. Plus a {Putrefy} {Grisly Spectacle} and 3 {Ubul Sar Gatekeepers}. Along with {Far // Away} and {Turn // Burn}. So I went 5 color and pulled second out of ~20 players. Only games I lost were in my final match against a boros deck where I didn't get any 2 for 1 cards. Just gotta thank {Gruul War Chant} for helping me close games and {Zhur-Taa Druid}. 2 costing pinger is awesome!
I milled a couple out with {Mirko Vosk, Mind Drinker}
Most ridicules thing ever someone did 3 prereleases and pulled 2 shocklands first time
1 shockland second time and 2 shocklands thirst time
And me I pulled 0 shocklands out of 2 times and tide for first with me and 4 people second time so got 8 packs and no shocklands
After one of my matches I was walking around and I saw an {Obzedat, Ghost Council} facing down a {Ral Zarek}. Bummed me out since I didn't get any cards worth more than $6.

No kidding! There was one guy with a {Trostani, Selesnya's Voice} and an {Obzedat, Ghost Council} and then another guy with double {Advent of the Wurm}. Me and my {Rubblebelt Raiders} and {Havoc Festival} were not amused :P
Now that I think about it, the only rare I played was the Raiders. And I took them out last game, I think.
Went 2-1-1, gruul with izzet :/
Notable cards:
Gruul war chant
X2 zhur-taa druid
Armed // dangerous
Mugging
Borborygmos enraged
Skylasher.
Prize support was 3 packs (placed 23rd outta 65) pulled a blood scrivener, another skylasher, and a notion thief.
Horrible failure with Golgari/Simic. My cards were okay, but I was so tired from lack of sleep that I just couldn't do it anymore and burnt out. So I went home early, and passed out on the couch. All in all, this was a super fun weekend! And getting 38 prize packs made it a tad sweeter. I can't decide at what pace to open them!
Hope you all had great weekends too!

5/0, signed up for dimir, got dimir/azorious. Esper control in limited was great. In the sidepacks i got 2 supreme verdicts and a playset of detention spheres. Along with a couple of hard to block/unblockable stuff buffed with etherial armor, games went really fast and easy.
That's impossible. You could end up with either a single {Supreme Verdict} or {Detention Sphere}, not more than one, you only get one rare in the guild packs, and the "side packs" only contained dragons maze cards. Don't lie friend ;/

Quote for truth, and to emphasize the don't lie part. It was only possible to have a single copy of an RTR or GTC card in your pool - not even possible to get foils for a double. Let alone a playset of anything.
If you had a playset of even a Dragon's Maze common, it would be fishy :P

That's obviously a lie. I got azorius allied with dimir and my unlucky self pulled a mind grind and a palisade giant. In my packs I got so lug neutral stuff that it was horrible and azorius, as Gorzo said before was dead last in the maze. It was said that dragons maze was going to slow the block down, I definitely didn't feel it at all.

Now you are just making wildly untrue claims. It is not possible to get a foil in the guild packs, they only have one rare in them. The guy next to you did not pull both {trostini, selensyas voice} and {prime speaker zegana} in the same pack because A:they are from different guilds and B: they are from different sets altogether. As to your original comment you claim to pull 2 {supreme verdict}s and a full playset of {detention sphere}s. That alone is six rares, and you only get six packs, only one of which, the azorius guild pack, would contain a single copy of either supreme verdict or detention sphere. Again, stop lying dude, it's not impressive.

Lul, why would one lie about a prerelease for magic? Haven't you evolved to talking about how big your 🍆 is?
My prerelease was my first sealed event ever, I actually just got my first DCI #
Went with Boros, was paired with Azorius
My rare for Boros was an awful {molten primordial} and my pulls for packs were pretty bad also as far as my guild went. I got a lot of simic/Dimir splits and the Dimir legend in my DGM packs, got one White rare (4/4 w 1/1 flyer token + populate) thats a better choice for selesnya, but he ended up saving my games a few times.
Like I said, ive never done limited/prerelease so building a deck was interesting, it initially started as 50 cards + mana and after my first round i cut it down. Fortunately with AZ as my sister guild, I was able to scoop a really decent pauper/uncommon deck.
Match 1: lost first game, played against a regular of the store who was geeked out, second round the izzet 1/4 defender + azo flash/return target to hand kept me in the game, we almost ran out of time, if he wasn't using extort I would have won for sure, once he pulled out Teysa though, I couldn't stop him pecking me down. Never pulled any removal...
So I lost that. (orzhov)
Match 2: played against a person with a 40 card deck. He won both pretty fast, gave me some
good advice on deck adjustments, I redid my deck build and dropped it from ~75 to ~50 cards (izzet)
Match 3: shouldn't have mulled first round Great hand, just 1 plain.... Many plays locked by one mountain not being avail. Second round adjusted some mana, then locked with a great hand, just no islands. Lost that one. I did manage to exile a clue stone on turn 6 or 7... (azo/orzhov)
It was gettin late and I was going to drop out, but friendly conversation with some of the other players and a bowl happiness and I stayed for the rest.
Match 4: Finally got a great hand with mana and cards, my decks synergy finally all came together, and I pulled some fast damage. Round 2 my opponent dominated with his rakdos aggro creatures and took me out pretty fast. Round 3 went into overtime, our life totals fluxing between 4 and 10 for a bit, I finally pulled through with flyers and pecking him to death. I finally won a match! We were both excited to finally play the game, as opposed to just laying land and then being dead. (rakdos)
Match 5: it's 5am, my brain hurts and I'm resting my eyes in between matches. I am out of weed and I can barely speak due to cotton mouth and not wanting to pay $1.50 for some water. I went to 7-11 already dammit! My opponent felt the same way, we had a good time chatting, first round, I got a quick battalion out and started ruining him with flying tokens. Second round his Dimir deck pulled out a nice combo and he extorted me to pull in a win. Third round was a beast, my saviors were azorious detainer, the flash azo gal, and the 3 riot controls. Constantly flashing my defenses in and out I pecked him down once I got my flyers and battalion out. The niv missed 1/4 defender proved a really good wall, in addition to the 2 cast 0/5 wall. I had about 9 life for most of the match and slowly took him down for the win. (Dimir)
So 2-3 for my first sealed, not bad, learned a lot, really pulled some great plays. Now I wanna draft another 😁
Welcome to limited, muggy! Glad you had fun, hopefully the prerelease got it's hooks into ya. Limited is such an extremely fun format of magic to play, and drafting is (in my opinion at least) even more fun than sealed - try it some time!
but yeah, i recommend you be as close to 40 cards as possible. 17 land and 23 spells is what you want. Consistency! I know how hard it can be to cut cards out, and when I first started playing limited I played 45~ cards. Over time, and with help and advice of the regulars, I learned just how big of a difference it makes to have exactly 40.
Esper control FTW! Orzhov paired with azorius in 2hg, partner ran naya beats, went undefeated!
Went 4-1 with Golgari/Simic with a red splash and ended in 3rd in the first of 3 I went to. Then went 3-1 and ended in 5th with Selesnia/Orzohv in the second one. And went 4-0 and tied for 1st with Golgari/Dimir once again splashing red in the third prerelease I went to.
