Title: Orzhov AND Boros...
Post by: Spikepit on January 26, 2013, 09:05:16 PM
Just going off a discussion in Orzhov Because... (Found here: http://imtgapp.com/forum/index.php?topic=17483.15), I came across a very interesting thought. Has anyone considered a tricolor deck in this block? For someone who regularly plays tricolor decks, I found it strange that I hadn't thought of it! Specifically, Im thinking Orzhov and Boros. Extort and Battalion seem to well together...

Discuss. ;)

Just read the same topic being lightly touched on in the thread Best Guild too. So I guess my actually point is can you see any other cross guild meshing?

It's one of the joys of limited, enemy colored wedge decks. It could work, but I do find 3 color decks to be dreadful in limited. One color always ends up doing nothing.

Ive discovered today simic and dimir go well together. Although I only used blue from dimir. But maybe that's because I pulled lots of unblock able green creatures

I would agree in most instances for Limited. If you go three, you might get pummeled by a cheap 2/2 while desperately waiting to topdeck your third color. Mono-color is the most consistent, of course, but to be as powerful as a two-color, you really need to get lucky with your packs, lest you cut a bomb or some choice uncommons.

In Ravnica block, however, I feel like the tricolors are the equivalent of two-colors in other blocks. With Gates, you can fix your mana easier, and without splashing, you inevitably pass on many of the best cards in your set, even though you could have pulled it off.

I.e. you pull {Archon of the Triumvirate} and {Sphinx's Revalation}. Due to those and your three {Arrests}, {Tower Drakes}, and two {New Prahv Guildmages}, Azorius is the clear winner. But do you really want to cut that {Izzet Charm} and {Izzet Staticaster} from your final deck? Seems like you could make some room for them, especially with those two {Explosive Impacts} you picked up late in your packs...
Nice discussion!

Havent thought of it???? That's all I have played in three different events. Boros adds just enough pressure to push for the kill.

It's not true in all cases of course, but mostly I stick to 1 color in sealed, 2 if I'm feeling crazy. Even in RtR. I haven't done pre-release yet for Gatecrash, but {Boros Charm} is enough reason to tri-color if I can get one.

Boros charm won two matches for me, one on double strike, the other burning his last 4 points of life.

Well, run your guild usually, and splash for removal. I think running three colors seems to work best, 2 minimal, especially in new Rav. The cards are way to good not to run 2 colors at the minimum.
