Overall I like it...took a bit to learn the mechanics but not that long. A computer savvy person who knows how to play MtG can pick it up quick. Can't zoom to read the cards so keep this App ready for DB searches. WotC is proly not thrilled with Cockatrice me thinks.
If it's avialable on your mouse, click the scroll wheel, it will zoom in. Also you can adjust the right hand toolbar to display whichever card you have last scrolled over.

No. But being based in Germany makes them harder to touch, I think. Similar to Pirate Bay. I could be way off base with this one though.

android apps were strikes much easier, google didn't even give a response chance to them as apple does, which was just the opposite of what I would gues if you asked me. About the app, I WOULD go down in android. But you could cydia it in iGadgets :)

Yea very GGs, I can't believe I made a rookie mistake. I board wiped with {day of judgement} and forgot about undying on your {geralf's messenger}....worse part is that I could have exiled your messenger with my {mimic vat} so I made two mistakes.....easier to make mistakes on Cockatrice.
Yup... I do that to sometimes... Forgot to do some things the game before I played you and it cost me...

IMtG is covered unless they pass SOPA which will never happen. Maybe it would have but the big companies tried to get too much power by lobbying extra BS in that bill. Could be a ruse to get the real one they want passed though. You know how that works.....I really want $10 but I ask for $1000 and then when we settle on $10 it is like I am doing YOU a favor.

Yes, free does not equal non-violation. I've never used Cockatrice but from what I understand, the software itself is probably legal, but using the scans in it is not. I understand that you* have to download and install the scans yourself, hence it's you who is breaking the law not Cockatrice's authors. I don't think it's right to do this. If I was a moderator, I would sticky Which Card Are You? in place of this ;)

While magiccards.info could try 'fair use' defense and win, I wouldn't bet any money on Cockatrice users trying this, should they get sued. Just my feeling after spending way too much time researching the bloody copyright laws, for obvious reasons ;)

I only play with decks I actually own. I get annoyed playing people that just copy the top standard decks and don't even know how to play them correctly...

I want to play standard and EDH, to the poster talking about Tier One decks unmade, I do have all the cards in a sense, except they are in the mail. Yes I know how to play it aswell. Magic really shouldn't be a game about who has more money to make better decks, so honestly I don't care if it's someone's first week of MTG and theyre playing Frites, as long as they are having fun.
I think some people use 'Trice to cheaply learn the game, and the Tier one decks, before investing the cash. Or they just want to play MtG for free...

Wizards isn't losing any money from Trice(, not much at least). Every person I've played has either played way back and wants to go back in, or has a physical deck.
My current wifi connection sucks too much to play Cockatrice...
Sometimes mine works, sometimes it doesn't. I've had connection fits like yours before. Honestly most of the time it's the Cockatrice server itself.

I do play more local games tho, testing my own decks against each other.

Tier 1 decks are the best decks in standard at the moment: Wolf Run Ramp, Haunted Humans, UW Spirit Control.
Tier 2 is really solid decks, just a little less proven BW tokens, pod variations, UB Control, Solar Flare?, Frites
Tier 3 is people's homebrew decks, sorry guys not everyone is going to have the best deck evar and also includes just for laughs decks like Turbofog. I enjoy playing each one of these decks and personally enjoy playing Tier 2 at competitive events and T3 with friends.
So how do you know what goes in what tier and who makes that call?

Try MTGsalvation. The standard forum there will show you. It's generally known/ assumed by the community what is and isn't in each Tier.

may even join you once or twice). I'm just averse to getting something for nothing. I don't like playing with proxies either, and basically you're playing online with 100% digital proxies.
To me, it feels like printing off a full-sized picture of a Monopoly board, printing off pictures of the money and cards, and playing the game at home. They might not be able to do anything about it legally, but that doesn't make it any more fair to the people that worked hard to make the game. Cockatrice just that process even easier.

I used to download music. Now i pay monthly for Spotify because its available on the market and works great!
I used to downliad series. Now i pay for netflix instant streaming because its available and works wonders.
When Wotc release a Duels of the planeswalkers thingy that doesnt overcharge and gives easy access ill start paying for that. Id rather play this than to overpay for mtgo and i support wotc by buying actual cards still because its a product i can depend on. It all comes down to what a person feels is his moral obligation to a service provider. I feel like there is no reason for me right now to pay for something i do not support (mtgo).
But i did get duels of the planeswalkers because its a worthy product with great potential. Im not disrespecting your opinion, on the contrary i salute you for it, but in my opinion, mtgo is not what it could/should be.
Also im on cockatrice atm and id love to play some with my 💩 casual decks ^^

I jumped on the bandwagon my user name is tjkoerb I have not much of a clue as to what I am doing though
Load a few of your decks into the deck builder. Then play a few local games by yourself till you get the hang of the interface and the shortcuts.
Also be a lurker and go and spectate a heap of games online before you play. Some people get stroppy if you don't know what you are doing.
Or! Get some of the guys off here who already play to walk you thru it. They were great to me :)

I reccomend copying and pasting these hotkeys into a text document and printing it to have as a reference. Or you could memorize them. That works too.

Hello and welcome to the official cockatrice guide for all those who want to know how to use it. Let's start with the very basics.
Section 1: what is cockatrice?
Cockatrice is an online program where players can play MTG online. It allows access to every single set ever made including from the vault and the Un-sets.
Section 2a: Getting started
To start using cockatrice players can register online on the website for free. They do not have to register to use the program, however; most players will only play with registered users. After registering players can download the program for free.
Section 2B: Getting your cards
After players register with cockatrice they will need to run the included program, Oracle, which has all the cards from every set. It's sort of a Database of every card ever made.
After this, you will want to run the main cockatrice program and open up the deck editor under the Cockatrice pull down menu. This will allow you to start building your first deck.
Section 3: Deck building
When you first enter the deck editor, all the cards that you have uploaded from Oracle will appear in alphabetical order. You can type a card name in the search box to look for specific cards. By double clicking or scrolling down with arrow keys and hitting enter, the selected card is added to your main deck. Clicking on the card and selecting add to sideboard will add it to your side board. Whenever you click on a card, it's art work shows up and any annotation text on it is displayed, along with its power and toughness and CMC.
If you don't like the selected artwork of a card, you can change by going to card database and selecting edit sets. Then you can rearrange the sets to show the work of certain sets first. For instance, if you have Zendikar at the top, all zendikar cards and it's reprints will have Zendikar art work ( including lands).
Once your deck is built, you can name it and add comments and then save the deck (Ctrl s).
Section 4: Let's play.
With cockatrice open, you can select a local game or choose to connect to the server. I reccomend starting a local game (or solitaire if you really like calling it that) to familiarize your self with the layout of the program.
Cockatrice is relatively easy to use, but takes a little time to familize with.
On the left hand side is your phases. Most players only use these for ending and attacking phases, but you may use it for every step if you want. You can roll initiative and shuffle/ draw a hand/ mulligan by either right clicking on your deck (top most box with a number) or by using shortcuts (see my whole thread with the list for those). Right clicking on your life total, the number by your profile pic, will decrease it, while left clicking does the opposite.
The three cards with a 0 when you start shows how many cards are in your hand. The one below that is graveyard, followed by exile.
The very bottom zone will show your hand, while to the left is the stack, and above your hand is the battlefield, with the lower third saved for land.
The colored circles to the right of the phase bar are counters. Use these for charge counters and such.
After you familiarize yourself with the layout, you may notice it looks rather drab. We can fix that later.
Section 5: Take it to the people.
Once you are familar with the program, you can go play online.
The rules are enforced only by the players in the game, so watch out for cheaters and be honest.
When you first enter the server you must select the MTG room and then you can choose or create a game. You can also join as a spectator, just remember that some games are password locked to spectators.
Watch a few games to get the hang of online etiquette.
Now for the customization.
Section 6: Making it your own.
Cockatrice can be customized, as can profile pic. To change the zone pics, go to the cockatrice PDM and select settings-appearance. Click on the three dots next to the red x to select a saved picture on your computer to use as background for each zone.
Be warned: pics do not get resized to fit the program. Use a generic background scheme for best results. Card back pics will be resized to fit the card though.
To edit your profile pic and region, you must do this by signing into cockatrice via thier website and then editing everything yourself.
Everything looks much better this way. Remember, you won't see other players background choices, just thier profile pics. Most players don't have one it may seem.
Final Section: Etiquette
Most players will hit the ending phase and then let you hit the next turn button to switch the turns. This is common curtesy, and allows you to play any end of turn spells.
Play fair: most people do.
Always say good game at the end of every match.
If you are playing with a new player, help them out a bit.
Closing remarks:

Only we see the card. Everyone else just sees it as "you placed a card onto your library". It's confusing but that's what happens.
