Can you regenerate to avoid death by means of -1/-1 counters?

Negative. -1/-1 counters isn't the same as damage.

Regeneration cannot save a creature from having its toughness reach 0 or less; it can only save it from damage.

Destruction. Regenerate saves from destruction damage or not.
