Title: What inspires you?
Post by: Quisequise on January 14, 2013, 09:20:39 PM
I played magic many moons ago but recently got back into it a few months ago. Since then I've been trying to collect (Innistrad set and up)and build competitive decks. If the deck isn't competitive I won't even put in together. And now I reach my problem. I have no idea what do with these cards we love. Now I ask you, my magic friends, what inspires you about our game?

What inspires me? I enjoy the mythos and story cards tell, plus I enjoy collecting. But what about all those extra cards I won't use? I'm thinking fnm battle armor..

I am inspired by the prospect of winning (or top 8ing) with something no one thought of, thinks could work, or my revamp of something that does work.

I started being successful with this about a uear ago. I played BW tokens and made some interesting picks that kept me ahead of the game. Then I moved to {heartless summoning} and dominated most the summer with that, even at the local PTQ that deck took me almost to the top till I got blown out by some random GDW with a 3 lucky {revenge of the hunted}. Pre rotation I reveled in turbo fog and proved it viable in the format.

Since rotation I struggled to find something truly great due to a lack of tech time, but when I got together with a friend finally we developed one of the earliest {omniscience} builds and I took it near the top week after week till my side project of turbo fog was ready and I used that to top 8 two weeks in a row.

I revel in the challenge of building something great that I can swing out of left field and make people question if the top tier decks really are the best. (I am a firm believer top tier decks get that way because of the meta at a large tourney not because they are the best, a majority of the top 8 players at a GPs get 2-3 byes and never face homebrews designed to go against top tier decks and instead those homebrews blow eachother out and thin the pack making them less likely to make top just due to the number of homebrews remaining by round 4.)

My goal; to collect every 2 faced card(done), then in foil(half done) than in Japanese, and finally Japanese foil

I just play casual right now so I try to build decks that are fun to play. We try to build decks that counteract each others deck. Just have fun with it. Build a deck that is you and not someone else.

All my decks (except my edh) are casual, so every now and then I look through my extra cards and see if I can improve on them, sometimes I will even run across a random card that gives me an idea for a new deck

The game adds a little bit of competition to my life that has been missing.

I play Magic because it is a game that challenges it's players. I love it because I feel that even the best and most experienced magic players can find themselves learning something new from the game. The "AHA!" moments when you reach a new level of understanding about the game are awesome!

Well, as many of you know, I inherited my dad''s roommate from college's cards. There was thousands of dollars worth of cards in there, and sorting through his stuff was humbling- he had all these high value cards, but all he ever did was play casually. I've been a competitive player, and haven't really cared about cards outside of their monetary value and usefulness. Seeing his decks, when he wouldn't even use his Revised duals, was humbling and made me rethink why I play.
When I play now, I play to honor his generous gift of cards, and to honor what I've learned is really important, albeit a bit corny:

-Kick back and have fun. Don't worry about the value of cards or overstress winking- it's not worth it if you aren't having fun.

My hope one day is to win a GP with a deck inspired from one of his casual decks, or win using one of his cards. That would truly be a wonderful moment, no doubt moving me to tears. So, I would say this goal inspires me also.
Now I play fringe decks- if there's another thing I've learned from playing his old decks, it's that he wasn't afraid to play outside of the meta.
That's why I play unorthodox decks.
I played Boros humans in standard before they announced RtR.
I play No-Land Belcher in Legacy.
I play Soul Sisters with {Norin the Wary} in Modern.
And you know what? I might get stomped on by {Force of Will}. I might get quashed by infect. That's ok with me. I'm not really playing to win.

I play magic for the dream. The dream of becoming a pro (I know that its nearly impossible but its a dream) i play for the competitive aspect of the game just as much of the fantasy aspect.
There is no better feeling to play a intense game of magic and be victorious in the end. Or going to a SCG tourney GP or PTQ and do well with not a top deck but a deck that you and your friends built.
I love the community yes you have your occasional loser who gets pissy that you beat him or you get stuck with a rule nazi at a fnm. But a majority of the community wants to help others and watch them succeed.
The game just has to many things to narrow down to one or to bungs that I like lol.

I'm more of the kind of person that goes through my couple thousand cards and look for cards that give me ideas mainly to make decks that arn't to common or not used at all that can beat most decks in my meta... Cards like {second guess} I never see people use

I like expirementing with different deck ideas. When I first started out, I pretty much ignored cards that were obviously good to try and find uses for all te different cards. I've gotten back into that recently, but have always enjoyed tweaking my deck
