Title: Good mtg teaching tool?
Post by: Kaleo42 on January 10, 2013, 07:28:11 PM
Is there a good VIDEO that explains the stack, priority, and nuances necessary to play truly competitive? I feel we need a quick and easy resource to refer people to that answers all the basic questions or affords people enough knowledge to figure it out themselves.

I believe it would be really cool if the Rules section was filled with questions about new mechanics and certain situations with odd interactions like {clone} and {emrakul, the aeons torn} vs. graveyard shuffles instead of "basic" stack and priority questions.

When i say "basic" keep in mind my perspective is that of a competitive player trained by rule nazi's and I realize it is no easy matter learning all this info (because it's not consolidated in one quick and easy place to my knowledge).

This is true. I dont expect people in this day and age to take reading an article of any kind over asking someone else to tell them te answer, however video is a lot more accepted right now and stands a better chance than the rule book as long as the video is under 5min.

If there isn't one. Someone should make one. And post it on YouTube. Then provide a link. They should also explain the basic rules

Kaleo it really seems like you just hate new players. I've read the basic rule book and the advanced rule book a few times since I've started playing magic again a few months ago and the game is confusing plain and simple. We all aren't fortunate enough to be taught by "rule nazis". So on behalf of all the new players, I apologize for asking "basic" questions on a forum and insulting people who have played the game for years.

Wow, not at all what I was going for. I love new players, thats why I help them out at every fnm. What I dont like is seeing or hearing the same questions again and again while not doing something to fix it. I am a problem solver, if I see a reoccurring trend then I try to see how I can either capitalize on that trend or eliminate (or at least alleviate to an extent) the cause of that trend. This is my attempt help new players as a whole rather than making each individual player wait for someone to respond to them.

Sorry if I offended, that's never my intent. My clarification of my use of te word basic was an attempt to avoid this exact confusion.

I personally enjoy reading every nuance of the game on the rule forum, if i had a hard copy of the rules id read it and know damn near everything, but since theres no known video and i dont have a copy, i peruse the rules forum and try to answer if i feel qualified, which sometimes im still not :p a basic video would e nice, but so would a comprhensive video or maybe a vlog that covers a few intricate aspects of the game every week/month (whenver the vloggers decides to post)

Kaleo. If you want there to be something that helps new players, and your a problem solver. Come up with the solution yourself. What would you do to aliviate the problem? (not trying to sound rude. Just saying)

Ok, so it looks like the answer to my question is: no, a consolidated video of what players should know beyond the basic rule book found in a deck builder's tool kit or other kit does not exist to our knowledge.

I will search more thuroughly or perhaps create such a video to help new players as a whole.

I wasn't trying to be hostile. Just saying if he's motivated to fInd a solution he will do a good job in creating it. I'd do it myself, but I dont know this game like I know the inside of my house

Like i said, vlogging.. Its not lame guys i swear ;) haha but yes a series of videos would be greatly supported by many enthusiasts. Im really jonesing to play competitive magic, but i just dk how and i think videos like that could only help. Thanks for bringing this up, ignore the sad new person who took it personally. I appreciate your effort and insight

I agree with the OP. I like the idea of a video. I will try to make one when I get time. Sounds like fun!

I'd be more interested in learning if an attractive woman was teaching.

Sorry fresh out of dem attractive ladies. Here is how it works:

Finding a chick who plays magic: tough
Finding a hot chick who plays magic: very challenging
Finding a chick who is good at magic and understands the stack, priority, etc.: mindblowingly hard
Finding a hot chick who is good at magic, blah blah blah: rapetastically impossible
Finding a hot chick who knows the above AND is willing to make a video of herself teaching it: .........

You have to have a script for video. If you don't the quality will suffer. With a script the actress doesn't have to be good at or even play Magic.

I like the idea, anything I can do to help, let me know.

Search engine! For the forums. Then people could find what People keep repeating over and over. And if there already is one, make it ore obvious

There's already a search function. People are just lazy.

Maybe we can pool some money and hire Sara Jean Underwood or one of those G4 people. They're outta work right?

Morgan Webb used to play Magic the Gathering.

I second this. Morgan Webb is such a weird nerdy chick, but I find that very attractive. Her physical attractiveness isn't quite a 10, but yeah, I dig her.

Somewhere around the 2:30 mark she mentions having played MtG. Seems like a good candidate.
