Title: Planeswalkers, Set Legality
Post by: LhûgThalion on January 10, 2013, 06:50:13 AM
So I'm sure this should be an obvious answer however I've never found anything regarding this in any of the rules....

Regarding planeswalkers, where they are reprinted almost every set, am I able to use older versions of them (for example {Chandra Nalaar} from the duel decks) in place of {Chandra, the Firebrand} from M13? Or is it not considered legal to standard?

Neither of these are legal for standerd.

If the card is functionally identical only. I.e. same name, same title, same abilities. Flavour text can be different.

M13 Chandra is absolutely legal for Standard.

Ok, thanks, I'm trying to get to my first FNM this week and I didn't want to have any issues with my deck, I've only ever played casual so abiding by the legalities is new to me lol

No worries... Enjoy!

I have an M13 Nicol Bolas (standard legal), and one from the Nicol vs Ajani duel decks... Whilst that set is not standard as such, the duel deck Nicol is functionally identical to the Standard legal card (M13 Nicol), so can be used.

... the M12 Chandra is also legal, as it is the same as the M13 one... Being the OP's point.

If a planeswalker is legal in the current standard, you may use older prints of it, if it has exactly the same name. However, this does not mean you can use older plainswalkers just because a newer one has the same subtype. For instance, you can use a {Garruk, Primal Hunter} from m12 because the same one is in m13. However, you can't use {Garruk Wildspeaker}.
