Title: Cipher, Illusionist's Bracers
Post by: prayos on January 07, 2013, 12:54:27 PM
Now, according to the wording in the article on DailyMTG (http://www.wizards.com/Magic/Magazine/Article.aspx?x=mtg/daily/feature/228#3) that explained Cipher, when the creature with the encoded spell does damage, it's a triggered ability.

This bullet point here:

Now, with that being said, will the ability be susceptible to the Illusionist's Bracers?

If it is a triggered ability then this works. {Invisable stalker} price spike?

I agree, it most likely applies only to activated abilities.

{Deathrite Shaman} anyone? Fun times :p

Screw that.  {Duskmantle Guildmage} + {Illusionist's Bracers} + {Exquisite Bond} + {Jace, Memory Adept}.  Game, set, match.

So what all would qualify for "whenever an ability of equipped creature is activated..."

Example:
Would it copy {hellrider}s ability when it attacks? Or worse, {zur the enchanter}'s ability when it attacks? Or is just the abilities you pay mana for?
I'm a little confused on what abilities can and can't be copied with this equipment...

Im fairly sure activated abilities are only those controlled by the player. {deathrite shaman} requires the activation by a player, whereas {hellrider} happens no matter what, and is triggered. The activation is what matters; the power must come from the player.

The bracers only work on activated abilities. An activated ability can be pretty easily spotted by the [cost] : [effect] format that they're written in. If you pay a cost for it (whether its paying mana, tapping a creature, sacrificing, etc) then this equipment can copy it. Triggered abilities (things like "whenever this creature attacks" or "at the beginning of your upkeep") will not be able to be copied. Those abilities trigger, they don't activate. In short, look for the :! Hope that cleared things up.
