Title: FNM probs
Post by: MisterJH on January 02, 2013, 08:31:28 PM
My only fnm around besides my group of friends who play ONLY does standard rules, EVER. How in the world do i get around this obvious block in thinking? They ruin my faith in humanity!

Get a few people do want to play other then standard.  Go to the lgs with them and say you guys want to play (insert type here). I know they will not turn down the money if you have the people willing to play.

Basically what I'm trying to say is they probably think they can get a better draw for what they are playing/offering that night.

But first off have you asked them about playing other formats. Even if they could do it different nights

Most FNM's are standard since most shops make more money off of new players. Standard is the easiest format to understand and get into since it utilizes the core sets greatly and has a large following that is often eager to teach. The older the cards are that youre playing with generally the less the players want to explain every card or even basic rules. Those players have played long enough, they just want to play the game not explain what the "stack" is.

Lmao...sad but true.

"would you mind explaining what the stack is, kind legacy player?"

"IN RESPONSE TO YOUR QUESTION, I WILL SLAP YOU ON THE BUTT AND CONTINUE TO REANIMATE EMRAKULE ON TURN ONE."

Standard is a great environment now. So many decks! Sure bant and {B}{R} zombies win a lot, but it's not Stoneblade, Delver, Valakut or Tempered Steel. Standard is currently a great environment to learn in and follows the "NWO" approach to card design. (https://www.wizards.com/magic/magazine/article.aspx?x=mtg/daily/mm/172)

But for everything I like about current standard has been happening in Legacy for years and years. Look at any of the top ranking legacy tournaments and 50 different decks will place high. The format has over 4,000 archtypes! Legacy has the obvious bar of cost, and people have the wrong impression of it being "everybody wins on turn 3".

Legacy is the most healthy environment, and I'm sure most players who play it agree. You can home brew, you can go rogue easier, you can play fast, play tempo or draw out combos. Advanced knowledge of the rules, the stack and card interactions is recommended, but traditionally older players play the format. We're more then happy to explain and help you understand those interactions, unless its a tournament.

And this is an example of what I was talking about. Instead of playing the game winning move and being congratulated for the good play, he has to stop and explain trigger and response rules about the stack which wont be believed anyways even after the judge says "yes that works."

I disagree! As a new player, always ask questions! It's how you learn and understand the game! Everyone will understand and should be happy to answer and help you learn. Unless they are jerks.
