Title: Countermagic, Counterspells, The Stack
Post by: MisterJH on December 25, 2012, 04:40:08 PM
Can any spell on the stack be countered as long as its on the stack? Or must counter spells be played immediately after the spell you wish to counter? Say player 1 plays {vandalblast}, i(player 2) pass priority, player 1 puts a {lightning bolt} on the stack, can i then {cancel} the {vandalblast}, or is the {lightning bolt} the only viable target for my {cancel}? These are just random example btw, im sure theres a way to complicate this.

I'm pretty sure the stack goes in order of play, i.e. stacks from first played on bottom up to most recent on top, so the  {Cancel} would catch the last played.  {Counterflux} would stop all of them by its effect.

So youre saying counterspells only work on the card before it on the stack?

When casting a counter spell, you may target any spell that is still on the stack. It does not have to be played immediately.

Keep in mind when 2 people pass priority without casting spells in succession a spell resolves when the stack is empty and this happens a step or phase advances

So if we both pass priority it resolves and i cant play anymore spells on that particular stack?

Just the top spell would resolve. You would then have a chance to cast more spells. If both players pass priority, and the stack is empty, then the next step/phase can begin.

Yes if I cast a spell then pass to u and u pass without casting anything that spell resolves and then u can create a new stack
Now I can cast a spell then cast as many instants or instant type abilities without yielding priority then u can do same when we both done the stack slowly resolves one spell at a time and keep in mind u can always add more to stack after it starts to resolve

Oh so if player 2 passes, player 1(its player 1s turn) passes, top spell resolves and the other lets say 4 spells are still stacked. Player 1 gets priority again because its his turn? Or player 2 gets priority because player 1 passed last?

Whoever's turn it is gets priority. So in this case, player 1 would get priority.
