Title: Lifelink rules
Post by: Theroguard on February 01, 2012, 10:32:36 AM
My judge says that Lifelink will deal damage equal to the power and youll gain that much life so if you have ageless entity and then have true conviction out you will gain double the life

{Ageless Entity}
{True Conviction}
When the entity hits the first time, youll gain life equal to the damage it just dealt (let's say 5). At the same time, you'd gain 5 life. This will add 5 +1/+1 counters on him making him 10/10.
Then the second round of damage will be dealt. He'll hit for 10 and you'll gain 10 life. This will cause 10 +1/+1 counters to be added.

Pretty sick. 😁

But when you ask a wizard he said that you gain life equal to the creatures toughness I left that out didn't I

But he also says that double strike hits the creature twice and not the player so if you hit the creature you hit the creature twice to a 1,1 is you to block a creature with double strike that's a 2,2 it deals 4 damage to that 1,1

Whoa whoa whoa wait.... You talked to a Wizard?  Sweet!  Did he have a robe?   ;D

Okay, toughness is DEFINITELY wrong, since lifelink has nothing to do with toughness.

Now, if the creature dies to the first hit from double strike, without trample the {Ageless Entity} will have nothing else to damage, and so you won't gain any more life in the second damage step.
A 2/2 creature with double strike will not deal 4 damage to a 1/1.  It will deal 2 damage in the "first strike" step which kills the 1/1.  The second combat damage step, the 2/2 is considered blocked, but there is nothing there to deal damage to.

And it DOES hit a player twice. I think your judge is saying that the damage is limited to the toughness of the creature damaged, which is more understandable than the damager, but not true

When I play DOTP 2012, and a double-strike creature does damage with lifelink, you get the life gain from both strikes, even if they block a 2/2 with a 1/1. I do not know if that is tournament rules or not in an actual paper deck game, but I thought I would add that to the discussion.

So in the game, if you attack with a 2/2 with double strike and life link and it gets blocked by a vanilla 1/1, you'd gain 4 life?  That's wrong.  By the time the first combat damage is dealt, the 1/1 should be dead before the second round of combat damage starts.

510.5. If at least one attacking or blocking creature has first strike (see rule 702.7) or double strike (see
rule 702.4) as the combat damage step begins, the only creatures that assign combat damage in that
step are those with first strike or double strike. After that step, instead of proceeding to the end of
combat step, the phase gets a second combat damage step. The only creatures that assign combat
damage in that step are the remaining attackers and blockers that had neither first strike nor double
strike as the first combat damage step began, as well as the remaining attackers and blockers that
currently have double strike. After that step, the phase proceeds to the end of combat step.

Remaining means those that didn't die from the first round of combat.

Yeah that dotp2012 thing has happened to me too, I've lost a few games I thought I could win because of that.

Re the ageless, give him trample with his double strike, lifelink and you shouldn't have any problems building a big fatty from him. :)
