Good I'm glad I was testing my bant edh and came across it. What my real question is I guess is: is a sac ability like an activated ability or can it be used the turn it comes down?

Sac abilities are used at instant speed, unless stated otherwise. And yes, they are generally activated abilities, as they follow the formula of [cost]:[effect] that activated abilities follow.
