Title: 📱MtG Toolbox📱
Post by: BlackJester on January 31, 2012, 02:40:00 PM
ðŸ"£Wizards has announced that they have just submitted their app to Apple. I only mention this because iMtG totally kicks its ass! ðŸ'ª

They're afraid, VERY afraid.   ;D

Maybe not afraid, but they certainly missed their own target, they announced at the beginning of the month that it's going out by the end of January. They will be very lucky to have it approved before the DKA release weekend.

I was a little afraid, but I'm not anymore ;)

This is not bad news, the other apps were on the market since forever and it's a good thing. Competition is a good thing.

I had not a chance to have a look yet, is it any good? What's missing vs. iMtG?

At a glance ... Everything I just downloaded it it's about 65mb and does some ironical download once you load the app they only have life counter , deck building card searching, events, articles and players profile I guess this would be the only thing missing from imtg I haven't found mass pic download yet not sure if it's available a nice touch in card search is card info aka when each card was released of a given set

The life management screen is beautiful, themes are nice, history/log is there, player profiles are nice, but it requieres you to build a deck for them if you want to log their decks, that sucks. Im sticking to iMtg =)

Downloaded it to try it out. Left a 1 star review. It is utter crap compared to iMTG. I'll be honest I expected it to steal all your ideas and be close enough that I might use both but it is really crap. I mean the colors are pretty and the artwork in the life counter is much more vibrant but that's the only positive. The life counter is terrible. You can show poison counters, and it slits the players screen into life and everything else, do if you only toggle on the poison counter on your side, you have a tiny poison counter toggle and then 3/4 of the side is blank. Even then it's a toggle. Click the poison counter and it toggles it to your life counter spot. Then you have to toggle it back. It looks like they weren't trying to copy iMTG. In fact, it looks like they didn't even know iMTG exists. It looks like they tried to copy SCG app. So you've got iMTG, a fantastic app, then a subpar SCG app, and WoTC who now has a subpar version of the subpar version of iMTG. How could they cock this up so bad? Thank goodness. The only real threat they are is for the idiots who won't try iMTG to realize its better. I mean how did they even get one 5 star review??

What I see as MTG Toolbox points in favor(that I think would be a good addition to iMtG):

•Artist, flavor, collector's number;
•Visual, themes;
•Easy visualizing players life total and changing between the players in bigger games (although up to 6 players);
•Commander cast times (suggest a commander damage also), mana counter (good for omnath for example);
•Friends record (i suggest the possibility to link this friends with an iMtG profile, so you can share games records and more) for quick game setup;
•All games history and specific games log (good for recording better what happened in long games. It also includes a log notes system if in tournament mode, very good for the most control-freaks, and cool feature to display);
•Big, intuitive, graphical icons in main screen (not all that special, for what it matters. If your problem is screen space it can be solved like them, with 2 screens (one useless for now, BTW));
•Darker display, less eye aggressive and more similar to magic theme);
•Subtype list instead of searching for subtype, allowing for more specific searches using one more parameter;
•Add to deck button in card view, then you can choose which deck to go;
•Direct link to card search inside the game mode (I also would suggest a rules search).

This is what I remember for now, will update if I remember anything else.

Oh, forget to mention iMtG's points:

•The app;
•The community;
•The community care of the author.

Thank you for an awesome app Piotr!

Their app, besides not having any advanced features and being basic in general if compared to iMtG, it's damn BUGGY in the few features it has. When I click in add event to calendar and confirm that I want to do it in a pop up message, it says it was removed from calendar instead and nothing happens in calendar. If I highlight an event, it's ok, then I try to remove from highlight it says it was highlighted. And keeps highlighted. I can't un-highlight neither add automatically in my calendar. So the events is rather useless. Also the 12 new events it says it has, they don't wear off when I check them

I wouldn't. With the beta version they released, no. I would concentrate on polishing the app first, then when it's mature, start proper advertising and all.

Oh, Mentonin, the collectors number is in grey just below card image in card view.

Part of me thinks they're slow-rolling it out to create more buzz with new features after the initial buzz wears off.  I mean, seriously, you can't put THAT many people on a project like this only to end up with what they have now.  They aren't doing anything that only they could do: DCI info, Planeswalker Points, prizing, merch, stuff like that.  I'm not going to tell them, mind you.  ;)

If they are not working on some sort of DotP of MTGO game-style app, they are fools.  FOOLS I TELL YOU!

But, then it probably wouldn't be in a toolbox, it would be it's own thing.

Truth is, I'm not really surprised... just disappointed.  They needed fewer, more skilled/passionate people on this project.  Less fluff, more stuff!

Yep WotC knows how to milk the money from people that's why I stopped playing magic when they took over several years ago. Also why I stopped buy dungeon and dragon stuff. This puts the second strike for me to keep playing magic if imtg closes I think that will be strike three and I'm out. I'll just spend my money I used on mtg and go back to buying Mayfair games.

I guess I was wrong WotC always owned mtg. But it seemed to change after ice age or an expansion or two later that it seemed watered down and they were just throwing expansion after expansion. They seemed to take away what made each color unique and give it to each other color.

So, you think R&D aren't trying as hard to make good cards anymore?  You don't think a good strategy to get people to buy more cards is to make the game more fun? ???

I think they are now but back in the late 90's I don't think they put much effort.

I think they took it as a business to make as much money as they could as quick as possible. Content started to dwindle. It didn't seem as fun it seemed they were just trying to mass market it.

My main issue with toolbox is that it won't run on my older software.. I tried downloading it and it said I need iOS 4.3+. This won't happen for me because I only have a 2nd gen iPod. Wizards need to seriously rethink their app...

Playing around with "Foolbox", I find that it does run very slowly, but there are some nifty features:

Tracking life total changes - good for tourneys
Tracking other game events - Times commander was cast, storm count, but honestly these can be done with dice or something.
Labeling the commander in a commander deck and possibly decking the legality of cards against it.  Again, not something smart players need, but sort of handy
In the search, only shows one instance of each cardname.  Then in cardview it shows all sets in which is was printed.  If I'm adding cards to build a deck, it usually doesn't matter what set my {Forest} was printed in.  There's a trade-of between the functional card, and the physical card itself.  With an app like iMtG I'm not sure what the most convenient way to represent cards would be since it uses both the functional cards for deck building and discussion, and the physical cards for databasing and pricing.

I'm not saying that Foolbox is a fine piece of work, though.  Like a ditzy blonde it's pretty but slow and doesn't help me.

The features you picked are on my TODO or on its way to it. I also just added the Lucky button to the CardView, how did we missed this one? ;)

Perhaps a addon of a tournament tally would be a nice addition. My friends and I do a box draft tournament every now and then and always trying to find the paper we are using to keep track of the scores aka wins and who beat who can the rankings of everyone to be able to see who gets first pick on the rares .
