It is an activated ability, but there is no response time allowed. They cannot be countered, redirected, or anything else. Priority does not get passed.

Rule 305 covers lands and specifies that all basic lands have the intrisic ability "{T}: add one mana of its color to your mana pool." The "{T}:" denotes it as an activated ability.

Rule 605 explains "mana abilities." They are a type of ability (activated or triggered) with special rules and requirements. You can activate them when you have priority. They do not use the stack (which is why they cannot be countered).

For activated mana abilities, it has to meet three criteria:
1. It doesn't have a target.
2. It could add mana to a player's mana pool.
3. It isn't a loyalty ability.

A land meets this criteria, as do cards like {Birds of Paradise}, {Silver Myr}, and {Apprentice Wizard}.

Spells can never be mana abilities (i.e. {Dark Ritual}).
👍👏👏👏👏👏

Would work great, except for the part that says "unless they're mana abilities"

Dark Ritual used to be an uncounteravle mana ability lol
