Title: Foils
Post by: Nickstefos on December 05, 2012, 04:49:45 PM
I "have it all" but still can't see foil prices. Why?

No idea, but this question doesn't belong in rules. Can a mod please move this to the right section?

Settings -> Fetch Foil Prices?

I've run the fetch foil prices multiple times and it never seemed to work for me either.

Does it crash, or what?

I hit the button and it says "Downloading Foil Prices" for like a second. Then if I hit Back a message pops up on the bottom that says "Processing Foil Prices." It goes through that for a while and when it's done I still don't have any foil prices.

Try downloading again and test it on Abandoned Outpost, please.

I just checked Abandoned Outpost and it was updated with foil prices. I was checking Corpse Jack Menace for my own and it never updated.

See, checking one example doesn't prove the whole theory. If it wasn't sold on eBay and picked by Magic Traders, it's not in iMtG.

Having said that, Zur the Enhanter should be there but isn't. Back to drawing board :P

It looks to me like pouring through thier data that my problem is obvious. They don't have M13 or Return to Ravnica in their data at all. Since my collection is in those two sets, none of my foil prices were updated.

We should look for another foil price source then.

There was a pretty lame problem with the very last batch, that's why Zur wasn't there. Fixed in the next version.

Why aren't the foil prices pulled from tcg?
Title: Re: Foils

Because TCG does not provide. Does it?

I don't know how you pull your data exactly but you can search tcg for foils. Even in this app when you click the regular price and it brings you to tcg, you can then select foil on that page on the left and it shows just the foil prices. So I figure there's got to be a way to pull those prices if they're there.

They do not provide it in their API.

I wouldn't bother with MT if TCG provided.

Like NyghtHawk mentioned above me, tcgplayer has foil prices, and a "foil" filter option which shows you only the foil prices. I have had a problem with it though, as some cards that are only printed in foil don't say foil on them. Specifically, the {Liliana Vess} from the duel decks. That version of her is foil, but not all the options said "foil" next to the card's condition.

I don't where the foil prices come from some cards foil prices are way lower than non foil and some are way higher

Is there any other site you could get foil prices from that are more accurate?
Most of the time I just would look at the normal price and the rarity and then depending in how rare or common it is add different amounts that seem reasonable like 25-75 cents for most commons and do on

TCGplayer does not provide foil prices in their API.

Magic Traders prices we use for foils come from eBay, so it makes perfect sense that sometimes they are cheaper than inflated prices from non-foil TCGplayer which come from retail shops.

TCGplayer emailed me today:

"We have a few API changes planned that I want to explain and gather your feedback on!

The first announcement is something I am sure you will enjoy... we are finishing up foil Magic card prices for the API. Once it is ready in the next few weeks we will be making the updated API available to each of you. This will most likely be the Magic Foil Median Price only.

So we are getting more accurate foil prices?

I suppose.

Sounds good. Besides more accurate there will be more in general as tcg generally had most fools prices for all cards. Magictraders does not.
