Post by: MisterJH on November 25, 2012, 09:31:45 PM
Where can i find a simple definition of the difference between casual, standard, modern etc.. Decks? Unless someone wants to quickly explain, but im just dying to know in simple easy terms

(For a more accurate legalities, there is a sticky post in each section)

Standard is the most recent cards. Usually the current block and the one before it and the current core set.

Modern opens up your card pool to pretty much everything in the modern card frame. (Possibly 6 years worth of cards?) there are bannings here.

Legacy and vintage are the oldest formats that pretty much have whatever card you can find printed in whatever set. Of course there are restrictions and bannings here too, to help keep the format/s under control.

Casual is pretty much your free play area. All cards are fair game. Go nuts :)

The casual forum is more for people to goof around and come up with whatever decks tickle their fancy. Unfortunately "help" doesn't come along with that, as those creations are more personally motivated or catered to a specific group. If you want feedback you gotta post in a more specific forum that has more readers who know the format.

If you go into the deck builder, and flip to the page where you can change the deck name, there is a menu to select the format.

IFeelLikeThisSucks is Legacy/Vintage ({Chromeshell Crab} is not modern legal).

Green Machine is Modern legal I believe.

In either scenario, they're kinda casual decks. I don't see either winning a tournament.

Unfortunately our Casual forum doesn't get much use anymore. One of the Moderators: BlackJester used to be all over it.

Well pick a format and look through the decks. Ask questions. Find out how things are playing, find out what kinda decks you like? (aggro/control/combo), which colors do you like? ({W}{U}{B}{R}{G}), how much do you have to spend? Where/when do you play?

DeathGaara has a wonderful series of posts in the Articles section all about bringing your A game. Standard has 20 decks a day pop up. If you like a specific card you can look it up in the Database, scroll to the bottom and see "Commentary & Criticism". That will search the forums for people talking about it, decks its in and other references.

Additionally, if you change the format for your decks in the deck builder, the illegal cards (banned, not valid in that format) will appear in red. It's a simple way to find what is legal. You can even use the "Card Database" to restrict which format, and search for cards within. This app is extremely powerful and amazingly precise. Full access to rule book, a rulings forum to ask questions about things you're confused with (its helped me plenty), a community of helpful people.

Welcome btw. Spend some time lurking, you can learn some stuff (and maybe even a fight or two).
