Title: Help, I'm a newbie
Post by: Ishanga on November 24, 2012, 10:27:20 PM
Alright, so I'm fairly new, I have played before with people on the college dorms... But don't have my own deck. I just spent 100$ on booster packs and bought a complete deck, but I wanna make my own deck, I already know I would prefer a black or green deck, just looking for some tips, and help with rules. Thanks

I agree. With this set, he more than paid for what he put into it most likely.

You could spend thousands sifting through boosters to find the cards you need. Though if you sift through singles at your local game store, as grueling as it might seem, it pays off.
Think about it. Your sifting through hundreds of cards and getting what you need. While if you bought a bunch of boosters, you may get what you need. But you've also wasted a bunch of money on cards your never going to use

Nothing wrong with lots of boosters, especially when you're new and need the commons still. Gives you variety, which you need to be exposed to as a new player - even if its less cost efficient than buying singles.

Anyway, deck advice. What set did you buy your stuff from? Return to Ravnica?  If so, green and black is the guild Golgari, so you should have lots of cards to support it. That color combination likes to play around with its graveyard, so look for cards with scavenge and stuff like {dreg mangler} that poses threats on multiple levels.

There are a few event decks that might be a good start it will have an insert that suggest how to play the deck and what to change to upgrade it to your play style.

I consider cracking boosters to be a waste of money. If I had $100 to spend I would spend it on some dual lands or something. That way, when the Standard season is over, I can sell them and get probably $90 back.

I agree proph. But when I started out, boosters were an exciting way to see what kinds of cards were out there and to get a feel for the world of mtg. Ishanga, I'll bet you enjoyed the surprise factor of opening those 20 or so boosters. While you are getting a feel for the game enjoy getting your hands into those new boosters and down the road try proph's advice and buy some singles that you really like.

I also agree with you about the adrenaline feel. I find that drafting is fun because you get that "feel", have fun, and win prizes without having felt that you lost your value.
