Title: Which is better?
Post by: Kareason on November 20, 2012, 04:26:56 PM
I'm looking for the better option for an EDH deck. I can see benefits to both cards but want to get opinions from other skilled players. So which is better:

{Night Soil}

Or

{Necrogenesis}

Necrogenesis cos in EDH you will almost always end up with large anounts of mana but mot aleays lots of creature cards in the yard. But often, this decision could come down to what deck you are playing.

I would say Night Soil has an ability that's harder to counter so I'd go with that one.

The problem with Necrogenesis is where the colon is placed in the activated ability. They can respond and fizzle the ability by returning the card to their hand or having {Ground Seal} in play.

True, but I have played both in  {Ghave, Guru of Spores}, and usually  {Necrogenesis} is better.

So I think usually  {Necrogenesis} is better as it etting fizzled doesn't have a very good chance.

Honestly, it's really going to come down to your playgroup. And EDH deck isn't something you can build and play without changing. You'll likely have to try both of them out and see which works best for your playgroup. It's going to depend on what decks you're facing, and how your opponents play with them.

I am playing a HEAVILY modified Counterpunch {Ghave, Guru of Spores} deck. My group rarely plays stuff to recur creatures unless it is Eldrazi or the occasional Graveborn type. We haven't done out first EDH yet so I can't be 100% sure what I will see. Just thought I would toss it out since I'm pretty split over it.

If you are running Ghave, run both, but necrogenesis tends to be better.

If I may answer you with a question, which do you more often find yourself with more of to spend as a cost; extra mana or extra creatures in graveyards to exile? If you can answer that, you have your card.

But like everyone else has said, it has a lot to do with your deck and play group. I've found necrogenesis more useful to me, but my play group has both the occasional reanimator and/or graveyard hate decks, so extra dead creatures are sometimes hard for me to come by.
