If you're okay with the loss of life, it'll thin your deck so you draw more spells. Mid-game it'll give you more activations for landfall.

{Vampire Nighthawk}s with either {Blade of the Bloodchief} or {Lashwrithe} makes up for the health loss. I used to play a deck close to this back in late Alara/Full on Zendikar Standard. {Bloodghast} is just plain ridiculous.
