I attacked my buddy with a creature and he has {Xathrid Gorgon}. This is in the middle of the attack phase where I already attacked with my creature. Can he use Xathrid Gorgon's ability on my creature to make it a defender and prevent it from dealing damge? Or will the attack go through and the damage be done, makin him a defender afterwards?
He would have to do it during the declare attackers step. There is no other time he has the ability to use gorgon's ability other then that step
To build further on this yes your attacker would become a defender and it would lose the appropriate abilities but it would still be attacking that combat.
