So, I had {vampire nighthawk} out on the field with 3 life. my opponent attacked me with a {loxodon smiter} equipped with {rancor}. Would I survive? when do I gain the two life from lifelink? I say yes because lifelink gives me the life when the creature deals damage. My opponent thinks that I gain life after combat phase so therefore I would loose. Comments?
You gain life when it deals damage. Since all combat damage is dealt at once, you gain life at the same time you take damage from the smiter. You take 3 and gain 2, leaving you at 2 life.
Short answer: you = correct; your friend = needs to learn teh rulez of magic

Not cool lol that situation always confuses me to
Can we get a resolved stamp put on this one? I was just searching on this topic for the answer myself.
(whether lifelink life can be awarded to someone who would otherwise be at 0 life and would lose as a state-based action.)
Ordinarily a state-based lose-the-game would trump any triggered ability, correct? (because triggers go on a stack and then someone gets priority before it can resolve). But as the previous post points out, if you thought "lifelink is a triggered ability", then you would believe the player dies. The key point: "Lifelink is a static ability"...as opposed to a triggered one.
Do I have that follow-up point correct? If it became a triggered ability tomorrow it would change this situation?

It hath been stamped!
And yes, if it were a triggered ability, you would lose the game before gaining life. Your follow-up point is correct.
