Title: Land bluffing
Post by: prayos on November 09, 2012, 08:55:57 AM
So, I was wondering if anyone ever bluffs with their land base?  For instance, if you've got a U/W deck, would you through in an {Isolated Chapel} instead of a {Plains} just to throw people off?  I ask this, cause I was playing against someone on Cockatrice for the first time, and I had a {Hallowed Fountain} out, and he mentioned since I was playing {U}, he thought I might have some counter spells.  Also, do you think there'd be some benefit to something like this?  I, for one, never see this happen at my LGS, but I could see it happening.

I do something kind of similar. If my board is good on land, ill hold any other land i draw in my hand to make them think i have something when i dont. I imagine thats fairly common though.

I had a tricks deck like that my friends hated playing. It was over 100 cards and it literally just had a mosh posh of cards that I couldn't use in other decks in it. I would play a forest, they would assume one deck. Then play a swamp. They get confused. Then I play an island and they would start foaming at the mouth. I would end up winning every time because every card in it was a rare or higher and just did random crap! It was so much fun. I MUST REMAKE IT NOW!

Lol I kind of do this right now. My deck is RB but I have sideboard in white. So I use red/white black/white duels main deck. Not really a bluff but it throws people off

I play a GW deck and I run a pair of {druid's deliverance} when I play my friends i'll keep a land in my hand or leave two lands untapped and they're cautious to all out swing

Land bluffing is a time honored tradition for the blue mage. I've made a 5 land opening hand appear as if it had 4 counterspells in it, when I only had one. I've made it seem like I'm getting mana screwed so my opponent curves out and I can wipe the board.

I had a green deck that had blue hiddin in it. So they would tap out for something I didn't like I would tap birds for blue or crack my {misty rainforest}. Once I even use a land my opponent {spreading seas}ed.

I like to set my hand on the table. They rarely expect the counterspell, unlike if you're sitting there waiting intently with it gripped (though that's a good way to bluff them out of playing their bomb).

I love counters in this meta. I save hard counters for {thragtusk} and {angel of serenity}, then I use soft counters for spells like {faithless looting} {brimstone volley} just to keep them from playing a lot of spells in 1 turn.
