Title: ARTICLE: A Long Way To Legacy
Post by: Thorn on October 26, 2012, 07:27:27 PM
So my very first magic deck was a Merfolk/Elemental deck from Lorwyn. After about a three year lapse I got back into MTG and the deck turned unto a {U}{W} fliers deck. I continued to play casual for about 1.5 more years. During that time I played MBC (mono-black control), and mono-green ramp. I gained and traded away some other decks but I still stayed fairly non-competitive. One day I went to a MTG group that I had not been to before and I got into standard. My first standard deck was {R}{B} control (before Innistrad  came out). Then came ISD and I freaked out. It became my favorite set very quickly. Like everyone else I switched my {R}{B} deck into {U}{R} delver. After a month o playing that deck I bought a werewolf deck which I still have and hope to improve when Gruul comes out. Anyway I then move on and had a whole collection of standard decks including Grixis Control and {Burning Vengence}. Finally withthe release of RTR I got bored of standard and paying tons of money to update my decks. My first attempt at a legacy deck was a {U}{B} affinity deck. I quickly got bored of that and switched to a mono-red affinity deck. (Artiburn in the legacy sectionof gathering).
Finally we get to my first legacy match. I walked into my LGS full of confidence and ready to play anyone!  I go to the back of the store to see who is there and *gasp* ther was a newb, and two standard players! I sat down and asked if they played legacy. Only one of the standard players did but he would not play until I played him in standard. I pulled out my werewolves deck and got ready.
He killed me. Using some wired control deck he just ran over me with burn spells and some other creatures. Eventually we got to the Legacy game. I pulled out my deck ready for anything. Well he had everything. A full Grixis legacy ccontrol deck that must have cost $1000+.  I kept on slamming my little robots and attacking but he had counters for everything. Eventually I had him down to 3 life but he had felt about 10 of the 17 damage through shock and scorch lands. I had nothing in my hand and he had 3 life. I top decked a {Great Furnace} and put it into play glumly. He untapped and landed a {Snapcaster Mage} flashing back a {Lightning Bolt}. I drew again and YES! Played a {Lightning Bolt} of my own for the win! Countered...
He drew and hit me again. I still had about 4 turns at this rate but I was not drawing anything. I had in play 7 out of my 16 lands. I drew again and gloated. This time I waited until he was tapped out (he had dropped a {Forbidden Alchemy}, {Izzet Charm}, and {Grim Lavamancer} ) and I cast my {Incinerate} which met a {Daze}! I almost rage quit right then and there but I held on. On his next turn he did some shenanigans and got me under 5 life. At this point I was freaking out. I had almost nothing left and he still had cards in his hand. I drew, not hopefully, and found a {Shrapnel Blast}. I almost gave up then I remembered my {Great Furnace}! I played the blast saccing the furnace and hoping for the best. NO COUNTERS! I won my first ever Legacy match!
The lesson here is never scoop until you are dead. ;)
Thanks for reading and I'll try to get back to Thorn's Lucky Cards soon.
Thanks,
Thorn/Murtaugh

I'm not so sure this is an article so much as it is a mini bio and a story. It was entertaining though.

As much as I feel you're not ready, the longer you are in my side, the more likely it is that you're going to move me.

Usually I write card reviews. This was just something I put together.
