Was wondering does cards like splinterfright and pack rat die if they become detained? I'm new to the game.
No their p/t is static and therefore not affected by detain. However abilities like the new guildmages would be stopped as they are activated. detain also stops your creature from attacking and blocking
*note activated abilities have a cost:effect
Thanks mate I will remember that cost plays a large role in the rulings.

Did you mean the new keyrunes rather than guildgates?

Guild keyrunes, guildmages, and guildgates are all activated abilities either way. Remember activated abilities will have the format of the following; Cost : Effect. Only if the detain source allows targeting of a creature, non-land permanent, or any permanent then it becomes more specific.

Guildgates are land and have no activated abilities.
They are activate abilities. Mana abilities cant be countered however.
But they are activate abilities nontheless! For example {Mycosynth lattice} +
{Stoney silence} means no lands can be tapped for mana.
I thought all detains said creature or nonland permanent though

For now at least. It doesn't mean say in sinker when all the guilds are featured they won't make more versatile detain spells.
