Title: Which do you play?
Post by: Dmreiss on October 23, 2012, 06:04:50 PM
There has been some discussion about the Modern Masters coming out next year.  I really couldn't care less.  I'll buy a pack or two, but that will be about it.  The reason is that they are not tournament legal in my area.  FNM is always standard or draft.  So really, do the rest of you out there have more variety in gameplay that makes the $6.99 cost worth it?

The way I'm looking at it is I'll buy a box of it just cause it's cool but I'll end up just using the cards from it in edh or casual kitchen table decks. I'm not gonna go full out to start playing another version of magic that I don't have the money for. Plus hey you never know, you may get a {tarmaghoyf}

Modern is a format they designed as a response to Legacy and Vintage. They wanted an eternal format that doesn't have a restricted list (cards Wizards cannot reprint).

Modern cards can be freely reprinted, opening the door for this type of product. It means modern is less cost prohibitive for players who wanna get life out of their standard cards.

I personally enjoy Legacy more, cost isn't an issue for me. I think the meta is healthy. Modern has a lot of banned cards and no real appeal to me because I play legacy, EDH and standard. Too much magic is too much.

So does modern have the support?  Or is this going to be more for collectors?  I may get a pack or two, but cannot see the point for kitchen table games.  Modern is just not supported locally, and I don't see this set changing that.  Besides, I don't want to get into another format.  Standard and casual (kitchen table) are enough for me.

I play legacy, EDH, some standard, and have been trying to start a casual group, but have no idea how to find casual players. That bathe.

I think it will be a big hit with the drafting scene. The boxes are made so that its perfect for drafting.

Modern is a very supported format. There was a modern pro tour this past weekend. Wizards is really trying to push this format. And on a side note I'm saving up now to get 2 cases of modern masters.

Nationwide it may be supported, but not the middle of Missouri.  Local stores run standard or draft.  So if you are near a large market I could see it being worth it, just not happening any where near me.  I would believe others are in the same boat as well.
