Title: Why isn't this card banned...
Post by: Guitello on October 14, 2012, 10:45:19 PM
Why isn't  {Serra Ascendant} banned in commander.... I have lost waaaay too many games to opponent getting her out turn one.... It's rediculous....

The same reason {Necropotence} isn't banned. Someone on the banning commitee must really like it...lol

Necropotence I'm really surprised isn't banned. The ascendent I'm not though - sure if played early its a 6/6 lifelink for 1, but with a 100 card singleton deck that's not something you can "count on" reliably. And all you get out of it is a 6/6 with no lasting effect and no protection from removal. Very good, absolutely, IF you draw it right away, but not so absurd as to warrant a ban.

My brother always seems to get the ascendant out early in games, he tutors with worldly tutor or ranger of eos and when he busts out his general (rafiq) it's over before it even begins. I have so much hate for Serra ascendant!

See I personally think there should be certain cards banned but their are some cards that are banned bc of the combos they can make. I think they should ban the combos instead. Like for example (and not saying this should or shouldnt be banned just giving an example) {Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind} + {Curiosity}  or {Kikki-Jikki, the Mirror Breaker} + {Pestermite}. They should block the combo that kills the game like if you have Niv in your deck then curiosity  cannot be in you deck. And for the record I use Niv just using it for an example bc of the infinite combo

How would you "prove" you don't run that combo without revealing every card in your deck? That's the problem with banning combinations of cards as opposed to just banning specific cards.

You don't need to prove it. If u play it then everyone would know wouldn't they and then u would get disqualified...just saying

Suppose this scenario happened: You have {Curiosity} on a creature. Someone kills your creature. You cast {Reminisce}. Later in the game you cast {Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind}.

How would your opponent be able to say you run both cards? I don't know what Rules Advisors are allowed to see, but are they be allowed to sift through your deck to find Curiosity? Seems like too much of a hassle to worry about something like that.

Obviously if you ban a certain combo its just easy to see.

You're playing someone. Look he has cards that arent legal in the same deck.

"Hey this guy is cheating!"

"Ok lets see... Yepp these cards are banned if in the same deck. Disqualified."

Although i dont want combo bans. Just silly.

Like {rest in peace} and {helm of obedience}... Sooo much hate for that combo...lets see...there's {Zur, the enchanter} and {diplomatic immunity}. Tough general to beat when the first aura grabbed prevents targeting and can't be targeted itself.
