Title: Vrask, the unseen
Post by: Righthandofavacyn on October 09, 2012, 03:30:48 AM
Ok for all you hardcore mtg players out there: my friend says that vrask will not see any play in tournements. Is this true?

I don't think it sees tournament play. I'll say it till I'm blue it the face, she is not a "threat". {Vraska the Unseen} cannot damage your life total. For -3 it can destroy 1 thing, 5 mana destroy 1 something? No good. The +1 requires that you need not attack her, and that's not a problem.

3 turns before ultimate is very good, and it's what makes her playable. But having a permanent on the battlefield that doesn't do anything for 3 turns? Doesn't seem like the recipe for success. Giving an opponent 3 turns to find an answer, see 3 more cards in their deck, 3 more chances before her ultimate. The ultimate doesn't guarantee success however. New Jace will see more play, his abilities change the board state and give card advantage.

Edit: I wanna mention the mana cost too. 5 mana for a mid-range non-threat that won't do anything for 3 turns doesn't sound much like a tournament style card. If it provided an advantage of any sort, I could see it. But curving into something that costs 5 mana and doesn't really do anything (unless you unwisely use its -3 and set the clock back even further).

Pro players don't rate Planeswalkers based on their ultimates, mostly anyone will say "treat them as if they don't have an ultimate". She happens to have a playable ultimate, but not many desirable other abilities. I may be wrong, but she seems like win more or an expensive 1-for-1.

Agreed vraska isn't a threat to much of any deck

So many 2-3 color decks and just about each color has an answer to her or her bad tokens

She just doesn't control a board like most planeswalkers do, if anything she is just bait to get your opponents dreadbore or cyclonic rift or detention sphere wasted on her to bring in an actual bomb from your deck

Cast her. Blow up their best thing. They waste a card on her or you get to blow up more things.

If it didn't see tourney play then it wouldn't be so expensive. Cause it sure aint a legacy card haha.

I see vraska as more of a sideboard tool that a jund midrange deck or even a zombie deck would use against control.

Hell, I'd still say she's better than tibalt the 2 mana fruit loop.

Not hard to accomplish. Tibalt looks cooler.

I think Vraska will see some play. She will never be a 4-of, probably not even a 3-of. And for the well said reasons above, I am doubtful she will see "top 8" action. But she is a planeswalker who is capable of immediately killing a permanent. She has some appeal, and some people will use her.

{Abrupt Decay} on the other hand, is going to be 4-of in every Golgari-color-friendly deck, well over Vraska. One way or the other, it will end up with a higher price tag (its already close).

Hese are what people said about Gids. And guess what? He is probably the 2nd or 3rd best 'walker ever. If you are playing a control deck with green, play her. She is just amazing.

Wel, I think a 3-of unless the format is SUPER creature based. 4-of more in modern and legacy.
