I'm no expert, but I believe it's a triggered ability.

Activate ability = Cost for effect. For example {Rix maadi guildmage} or {Skirsdag highpriest}

Trigger ability = Effect happens, causes trigger.
For example Talrand. Casting an instant, triggered.
{Champion of lambholt} a creature enters the battlefield, triggered.

It's an activated ability if it has a colon

Ok sweet that's what I was trying to explain to him but he's like no you don't get drakes he's arrested... Worst part is I even cloudshifted him after and he still went on about it
