Title: RtR First Impressions
Post by: Dmreiss on September 30, 2012, 08:33:00 AM
I played Magic in college, and then took a break.  I came back during the Innistrad block, so I missed the original Ravnica.  Looking at spoilers of the new cards and hearing how awesome the original was got me pretty excited for the new set.
I played the pre-release last night, and now I have a question... Does the Ravnica set make it too easy to build a competitive deck?  Especially during the pre-release when you get a guild specific pack?  For instance, from now on, will I be able to predict my opponents deck after just a few cards?
Thoughts?  Opinions?

The pre-release was pretty predictable, but with so many cards available from previous sets, I don't see it being real predictable because of one new set.

In a limited format yes it's very predicinbly but as soon as scars rotates out and RTR comes in to mix with Indy block, for the first month anything can go untill November when you will see a distict top 8 decks at all the state level Tourneys and who knows with such a Deverse set there may not even be a distict better deck and good be like zendikar when liturally home brews dominated.

I loved the prerelease. I am going to build a junk deck for standard. {Abrupt Decay} and {Lotleth Troll} are so broken IMHO. Throw in {loxodon Smiter}, O-Ring, and {Selenya Charm} and it's good times.

After listening, you guys are right.  It was a pretty shallow pool of cards, especially with the guild packs.  When you mix with Innistrad and M13 there will be more variety.

I'm seriously underwhelmed by blue. Besides {Cyclonic Rift} I don't see any real constructed cards. While it is a set focused on promoting multi-color, it's disheartening to see.

With that said, it's kinda be fun to brew and use Detain. It's got some good utility.
