Can {elvish spirit guide} be countered if you use her effect? It's not getting played right it's getting exiled

If you are exiling it from your hand, it's not a spell so it can't be hit with "counter target spell" like {cancel} or most counters. I believe it can still be {stifle}d though, unless its considered a mana source, which it probably is.

Actually, the spirit guide's ability is a mana ability, right? Does it use the stack? And even if it does, it's already exiled by the time anyone could do anything, and you can't target floating mana.

Either way I have to say no, the guide can't be stopped from making mana.

Mana abilities don't use the stack and therefore can't be countered.

Correct. This is a mana ability. (Even says so in rulings)
Some cards tap for mana, this one you have to exile it from your hand. No problem.
Now if you play it as a creature it can be countered when on the stack, just like any other spell.

In short, mana can't be countered, but what you pay with it can.
