Title: Vexing Devil cannon!
Post by: Insanoflex on September 20, 2012, 02:42:19 AM
Easy one. Vexing Devil, opponent decides to take the 4 damage, and Fling it before the sac goes through.

I don't know how to link cards..using an iPhone.

Vexing Devils has one ETB ability. If it begins to resolve, it resolves completely before anyone gets priority. Therefore, if an opponent chooses to have Vexing Devils deal 4 damage to him or her, it will be sacrificed during the resolution of the same ability.

What he means is, it doesn't work because your opponent makes the choice when the ability resolves, not when the devil enters the battlefield. So by then, it's too late to fling him- he's already dead.

Also you can use curly brackets {} to link cards.

If I'm not mistaken, there is time in between playing then deciding. If you have {Vexing Devil} played while having {Blood Artist} on the field, the artist's effect still triggers. It's not a counter to pay the 4 life. The card resolves then the decision trigger starts, so you can still {Fling} it.

Fling or damage cant have both. The ETB effect is triggered when he enters but no choice is made till that trigger is resolving, similar to {mana leak} or {izzet charm}. This is important because they can respond with other effects but if you counter those or they dont play out as they had hoped in the end they still retain the option of just paying the additional mana for their spell. Same with the devil, they could {safe passage} in response then allow the devil's ability to resolve by choosing damage therefore taking no damage. Part of that resolution is putting it in the graveyard though. At no point during any effect can you interject during it's resolution with a different effect. You either put on the new effect before the resolution (but after the trigger or cost) or you wait till after resolution.

Could you use {Undying Evil} on the {Vexing Devil} so when they pay 4 then it comes back and they have to pay 4 again?

If you do it before they decide which in most cases will make the decision for them.

So, you'd cast {Vexing Devil}, and then cast {Undying Evil} targeting the devil before they take the 4 damage?  But, you couldn't cast {Undying Evil} in response to them taking the 4 damage for the devil?

No because at that exact moment they choose damage the devil ceases to exist sunce it is all one effect.

Youre misunderstanding when the choice is made. Devil's ETB goes on the stack, players are given a chance to respond. Only when it is time to resolve devil's ETB is a choice made and at the moment the damage choice is made the devil is dead. It is all one effect, no player can interject halfway through an effect resolving.
