Title: Combat sports
Post by: Dudecore on September 19, 2012, 09:50:03 PM
Does anyone here take any combat sports lessons? jiu-jitsu, muay thai, wrestling, ect. If so, do you feel better because of the challenge?

I'm trying to get into it. I've done it before, done the jiu-jitsu thing before it was hugely popular. I've been out of shape, and becoming increasingly upset because of it.

Basically I just wanna know if it's worth getting into because of the obvious costs, but more then anything I wanna be fulfilled. I want the mental challenge and physical challenge. Because so many people in the last couple of years have entered the game I don't have an awareness.

I did wrestling all throughout middle school and high school. Changed my life. Its that mentality. I have been wanting to go back and coach.

I did Jeet Kune Do for many years. It is excellent for self defense, fitness, confidence. Make sure the Sifu teaches Original JKD as taught by Sijo Bruce Lee and not Concepts.

I miss Kung Fu, more just for the exercise than the fighting. 💪

The exercise and stress relief is amazing for heavy martial arts

Wrestling was one of the toughest and most rewarding parts of high school. If you would rather avoid the costs and time constraints, weight lifting, swimming, or just running can be nearly as fulfilling. I know your woe. I have a 1 year old and the experience has left me rewarded but increasingly out of shape. Good luck.

Weightlifting and cardio are great parts of my life, definitely consider getting a gym membership. There are affordable ones and there's places like anytime fitness that have everything.

First things to check for when I'm outta town: anytime fitness and nearest card shop :)

If you can find a cheap enough class for Jiujitsu then I think it's totally worth it. And judo was super fun too. I know there are some MMA gyms that offer Muay Thai and the classes kicked my butt and I consider myself in decent shape too.

I think I'm gonna do an MMA class. It's about $130 a month for all the classes I feel like making. Not gonna kill my budget and I could learn something

Yeah man. That's a decent price for the gym. If you go at least twice a week minimum it's more than worth the money and you'll get in good shape.

@Coffee, did you ever get weapons training?  I wasn't really supposed to get it, but I insisted so my Sifu taught me some staff and stuff.

I've had good experience with the YMCA. Facilities I've used have been affordable and, depending on the town, run the spectrum from a bit ghetto to downright fancy. The cost is low and if they are well run have some great equipment, classes, and community outreach. Sadly I've never found one that hosts mtg tourneys...

Not officially, but I got some nun chucks for my birthday once and asked him to teach me some moves. Not a kung fu weapon but he was really good with them.

For $130 you can get a box. Then just watch samurai Sunday to learn your moves.
