Title: Standard Cycling?
Post by: Elite621 on September 13, 2012, 02:00:48 PM
How do you handle cycling out a years worth of cards removed of you Standard Deck(s)?

Is this a difficult and expensive endeavor? Or do you find it an exciting opportunity for trades and upgrades?

How drastically does the play at your local shop(s) change? Is the balance of power shifted at all, while players test lots of new decks? Or do the best players and/or shop employees stay right at the top of the competition?

I started playing with Scars and have enjoyed new sets coming out. So other than losing M11 cards, I haven't experienced losing half my options, while gaining new ones before. The process seems phenomenal to me, in theory.

It's not so bad. If anything it challenges you to be more creative. Most of my spell suite from UW Delver will go away, but additional cards like {Judge's Familiar} and {Detention Sphere} making their way in.

Post-rotation is a scramble for people to try to keep their old deck with new toys, or come up with something brand new. Although we have fewer cards to build from, it becomes more challenging to create a new deck.

Cycling is a must. Imagine if we didn't cycle out the Scars and m12 block. When return to ravnica come in standard, people will lose to turn one infect or games will go ridiculously long for anti-blue control decks. Other decks can super powerful. We do this to make it fair for beginning players. Those who get hooked in the game need to be smart.
Usually the smart magic players can decide if they want to keep rotating cards for modern decks to go up in price. Smarter magic players sell some cards for profit before it drops in $.

I will keep most of my decks the same for kit hen table games.  But I have about 2 or 3 decks that I will be changing up in the coming weeks.  I have been. He king for spoilers and developing ideas on how I can rework those decks with new mechanics.  So I won't be selling any cards, but I will be buying plenty (probably a box and then singles).

Here's what i saw last rotation. Those with the capital to buy new cards create new and exciting things. Those without take what they still have and try their hardest to make it work. This is an awkward time for trading that can envolve a lot of unfair trading where people value a card at it's posted price or anticipated price point based on what is in their favor.

As for pushing old stock. I recommend trading them in online or at a shop (whichever gives you the best credit) and using that credit for new cards. Keep what you have a use for or know you will be able to trade in the future.

You can play extended too, if money is a problem. You keep Zendikar - M11 - Scars - M12 - Innistrad - M13 - Return to Ravnica.

Thanks everybody. I can't say I'm concerned about the change. The truth is I find it very interesting. As much as I like playing at my local shops, I also enjoy showing up to just observe the changes and strategies everyone makes.

Cheers.

Innistrad is is the 1st set in Innistrad block.
Avacyn Restored came out about 5 months after Innistrad

I am so ready for the cycle =P I already have a post rotation deck and will only need a few more pieces in order to change my B/R Vamps and Esper Spirits to Post Rotation playable! This is the fourth rotation I've seen firsthand, and honestly I usually drop out for a good month when this happens, it's hard to adjust to. But this time around I'm ready 2 weeks in advance =D All I need now are Shocklands!

This would be my first I stopped playing for years last time a rotation happened (scourge and onslaught were still in standered at the time) while I was playing and now I'm so lost lol I just separated my soon to be standerd and non. And noticed like 1/2 my collection is going out of play... I have the Capitol that I preordered 2 boxes and a fat pack but I'm still lost as to what to do deck wise. Idk if I want to adjust decks or just build whole new ones. I'm thinking of just editing my human deck for post rotatiOn standerd just because it's almost there already lol

All my decks will still be legal when rotation hits. There's not much in RtR that I'm excited about, so I'm good for a few months until Gatecrash drops. Then I'll have my fun with {B}{U}.

Im really curious if people's favorites might change with the new cards. I hated rakdos prior to the spoilers, but aside from it's crappy mechanic i kinda like it now.

New rakdos, 2 pillars of flame + 4 swamp = Griselnuts

GG
