Title: Animar deck for a bud
Post by: AgrusKos on September 12, 2012, 11:38:02 PM
My friend wants to get into EDH, and I told him I'd throw a deck list together. He said he wanted an {Animar, Soul of Elements} deck. Can I get some help? I want his deck to be awesome but he doesn't have a whole lot of money to spend. Please?

Well.....  Obviously you want the standards. {sol ring} {lightning greaves} ext.. After that I'd say it's all about protecting Animar and dumping a lot of creatures.
Maybe something like {bond beetle} and other small creatures that have cool etb to dump early.
There are Lots of cool goblins to run that'll help pump animar up enough to drop your game winners. (Elderazi cough, cough)

Returning creatures to your hand is really helpful in an animar deck. Not only will a timely {unsummon} save a creature from removal like {terminate}, but recasting it adds yet another counter to your Animar.

Should {Roaring Primadox} go in?

{Deadeye navigator}, plus either {great whale} or {pelicron} with animar = infinite mana/ counters

Have you looked into the precon? That's a good starting point. It's gonna give you the staples:{sol ring} {lightning greaves} etc and then you can work it from there

An animar edh decks devoted to artifacts is really fun. It's also just under 100 dollars. Unless you want better guys.

Agreed on the precon being a great way to start.  It has the essentials and it's cheap.  Could add in some goodies like {Asceticism} and {Darksteel Plate} to protect animar.  {Erratic Portal} would work nicely too then throw in enter battlefield creature like {Duplicant} and {Woodfall Primus} with {Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker} for profit.  :-$
{Mana Reflection} , {Primeval Titan} , {Oracle of Mul Daya} and {Glen Elendra Archmage} would round it out nicely from there and it doesn't break the bank.

I've got a friend with an Animar deck. He says its really fun. Basic premise is ALL creatures. The only non-permanent card in the whole deck is {Primal Surge}. So that could be fun

I play Animar as my general.

I don't go all creatures. I have a lot of them, but not all. I play a few counterspells for some control and then have creatures with ETB effects and colorless creatures that get good discounts. There are obvious perks, like having R for {Kiki-Jik}i, U for {Pestermite}, and G for {Tooth and Nail} or {Defense of the Heart} to dig them out with. There are the free (or almost free} {Kozilek}s, {Ulamog}s, and {Blightsteel Collosus}'s. Animar's protection from white and black prevent an astounding amount of removal.

Then there's {Tidespout Tyrant}. This card makes Animar go crazy. Say I have an Animar with three counters on him, an {Iron Myr}, and a {Solumn Simulacrum} on the field. I draw into {Tidespout Tyrant}, cast it, then play ANY spell, so in this case.. A {Kird Ape}. Animar gets a counter, and that spell bounces the Solumn Simulacrum, I play it for free, fetch a land, give Animar a counter, then return the Iron Myr and play it. Long story short, my Animar has infinite counters. Play anything that can give him trample and it's good game. I usually fetch the Tyrant with a {Brutalizer Exarch}.

I hope this helped. You can look into Morph Cards (yes, you play them for free if Animar has at least three counters on them, and no, Animar doesn't effect the cost for flipping them), and try to find a good balance of counterspells to prevent boardwipes.

If you have any other questions feel free to ask!
