You are allowed to use basic lands of any type (island, forest, mountain, swamp, or plains) in a commander deck with a colorless commander like {Karn, the Silver Golem}. Those basic lands, however, will only produce colorless mana instead of their usual mana of color.

Nope, they contain mana symbols so they can't be used.

It's a special rule for colorless decks to allow them the option of using basic lands. It is an officially adapted rule, specific to decks of no color just to relieve the stress abd hassle of forcing them into getting 40~ different nonbasic colorless lands for their deck.

I'm not even sure if there ARE 40 playable colorless nonbasic lands.

Are there any lands to look at specifically?

You be right unless another ruling says otter wise, but also keep in mind commander is mostly house rules, so in a commander pod at an event if someone in your pod says you have an illegal deck and says to the judge that he or she doesnt find it fair or just doesnt agree to let you play it youcould get DQd or just have to have another deck handy.

Hmm... Well, since all the lands that have any color costs or production are out, you are going to want really any land that enters untapped, can produce {1} (or more), and ideally offers an optional effect that might be of use once in a blue moon. Take {Ghost Quarter} for example. Most of the time, it will essentially be a basic land for you. Every once in a while, an opponent will play a troublesome land like {mikokoro center of the sea} or {Svogthos the restless tomb} and use can use your quarter to get rid of it.

{temple of the false god} is a good one for you also. It's good for any EDH deck really, but in a deck without color it's even better. {darksteel citadel} is another one...I suggest going through sets you have most available and filtering iMtG's search by land. Sift for gold!

Edit: dammit, I hate being wrong. The colorless commander basic land rule is an ALTERNATIVE rule, not the official rule. Shiv is right, officially basic lands cannot be in a deck with a colorless commander. You're gonna have to find 40 nonbasics with no color anywhere on em. My apologies for the misinformation

Thats gay. You would think they would be a little more laid back in a casual format. I mean it's freaking edh. It was made to bring out the max creativity in players, so to limit them is retarded. Plus who cares what wizards has to say on this ge type, they only got involved to make extra money. I say .love. em. It's not hurting anyone to play basic lands but they only tap for colorless. So I say live your dreams bro and if someone has the audacity to be a douche nozzle and call you out on it, you can send them to me and I'll personally tell them to .love. off and to eat a dick.
