Title: Hey Gorzo
Post by: Greg54js on September 06, 2012, 07:59:22 PM
Gorzo I need your opinion.

What do you think about a {crosis, the purged} deck? It would focus mostly on hand sculpting the opponent, not allowing them to play anything (counters) and then red, black and arti creatures to win the game.

I have a friend who's giving me a list of discard spells but I wanted your opinion

Not Gorzo here! Since commander decks  usually feature  2 or more colors Crosis comes a bit short. But! That doesnt mean you shouldnt do it! Add some evasiveness to get use out of his ability but the forthought could be commander damage?
Also grixis is the perfect combo for deadly draws! Lots of {Lilianas Caress} like cards, {Underworld dreams}, Izzet stuff like {Niv mizzet the firemind} {Nin the pain artist} and ofcourse artifacts like {Font of mythos} and {Howling mine} that with discard and more card draw could also work as you'd screw up your opponents hands and deal damage if everything goes right.
Note im extremely fresh for commander so this may be bogus advice.

How'd I get this reputation? :P my opinion is no better than anyone else's! But I'm happy to give it when asked.

Crosis makes a great general, I'm surprised you don't see him more often. I guess it's just because grixis has so many options. I recommend {whispersilk cloak} highly, and a couple of unblockable auras like {tricks of the trade} to make Crosis especially lethal.

I only caution you not to lean TOO heavy on discard. Some is great and can be an incredible strategy, but what happens when your opponents are out of cards in hand? Most discard spells are sorcery speed so you can't stop their top-decks when you get to that point. And then all your discard effects are dead cards in your hand.

Not bogus at all Fen, {liliana's caress} especially is nasty if you're pumping out the discards - just make sure they don't run out of cards to toss! {painful quandary} might give them some incentive to keep cards in hand.

That would be perfect. Also {Jaces archivist} with lilianas caress is awesome!

Fenster: you know crosis is {R}{B}{U} right? Lol

Thanks for the tips Gorzo. What should I include for the other 2 colors?

{B} - your discard stuff (duh), + your primary board wipe source ({Damnation}, {Life's Finale}, etc), + tutors ({Diabolic Tutor}, {Diabolic Revalation}, {Demonic Tutor}), + utility enchantments ({Painful Quandry}, other above-mentioned goodies), + nasty creature source 1 ({Sheoldred, Whispering One}, {Nefarax, overlord of grixis}, whatever, there are a billion bombs in {B} lol).

{R} - Board wipe secondary source ({Comet Storm}, {Blasphemous Act}, {Chain Reaction}), + nasty creature source #2 ({Avatar of Slaughter}, {Dragon Tyrant} if you have a lot of red, {Charmbreaker Devils} if you are heavy with discard spells - get them back plus play a ton one turn for a massive damage devil. Lots of powerful flying dragons to choose from too.) I'm sure red has some utility effects to offer too.

{U} - Counters, + Draw Spells ({Minds aglow} and other "everyone draw" spells will be great for you, since you can just make em discard what the draw. {Trade secrets} is my personal favorite.) + instant/sorcery recovery ({Mnemonic Wall}/{Archaeomancer}, {mystical tutor}, {personal tutor}) + Creatures ({Sphinx of Uthuun}, {Stormtide Leviathan} if you have a lot of flying, blah blah)

I yammer on way too much. I can go on with artifacts and a couple multicolor spells if you want, but I feel like I'm blabbering haha

You done asked for it! I'll try to keep it short :P
Multi - you are fortunate enough to have {R}{B} in your colors, so slap {Terminate} in there! Probably the best single-target elimination spell IMO. And with r2r coming out soon, you'll have some glorious new Rakdos cards for sure. Dimir won't be out til feb, but you might want to browse through the old rav sets for Rakdos and Dimir cards. And of course, shards for grixis! Huuuuuge bombs like {Thraximundar}, {Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker}, {Slave of Bolas}, {Elder Mastery}, {Lightning Reaver}, and many more.

Arti - there are a few staples - {lightning greaves}, {Swiftfoot boots}, {whispersilk cloak}, {Sensei's Divining Top}. Most of your mana fixing is going to come from artifacts since you lack {G}. {Armillary Sphere}, {Gem of Becoming}, {Expedition Map}, {Darksteel ingot}, other {manalith} type artifacts.  Depending on your style of play, you may wish to add some equipment or utility artifacts over enchantments and auras, as they synergize well with each other typically. They are also easier to tutor for in your colors, with blue tutors like {fabricate}, {treasure Mage}, yadda yadda. But that is all play style preference.

Edit: I failed to keep it short.

Oh no no no i just meant people tend to run more than one color, so making them discard just one out of 3 = not that effective ;D

Lol should probably have told you this deck is going to be using my old bolas deck as a shell. So some of these staples such as {terminate} is already there :)

Artful dodge is excellent for any deck with creatures who have abilities when they deal combat damage to a player or even any of the swords.
