Title: Another bonfire question
Post by: An Angry Fatman on August 30, 2012, 10:05:48 PM
The other day I was watching a match and a creature had protection from red and then his opponent played a bonfire of the damned. The two players didn't know what to do, so they turned to me and my buddy who know the rules better than a majority of people there. I said that the bonfire didn't target the creature but instead to the player so the creature would still die. My buddy stated that the creature was being delt damage from a red source therefore no damage would be delt. So we took a majority rule at the store and they agreed that the creature lived.

Thoughts?

The creature lives, protection protects it from damage from any red source.

But a pro white would still die from a {day of judgement}? Is it because it's not damage but destroy?

Yup.

Protection stops the following:
-damage
-enchanting/equipping
-blocking
-targetting

White and black board wipes generally go through protection as they're either "destroy" or -x/-x. Red ones usually get stopped as they're purely damage.

The player and all their other creatures would still take damage in your example though!

Protection stops damage how does that not make sense.  Doesn't matter if it wasn't targeted it's being dealt damage by a red source and it has protection from red

That part makes sense... I guess I don't understand because it deals damage to the player not the creatures. The card never targets any source other than the player. So secondary damage to the creature wouldn't matter of protection in my mind. I had a reff agree with me tonight on this so I guess I'm getting confused on mixed rules :/

It doesn't matter if it's targeted, secondary or anything else. Anytime a red card deals damage to a card with protection from red the damage is prevented. No ifs ands or buts about it.

This is all that matters.

"is it damage?" yes
"is it from a red source?" yes.
Prevent it.  Fini!

You can show him this:

Comprehensive Rulebook 702.15e

Any damage that would be dealt by sources that have the stated quality to a permanent or player with protection is prevented.

While we're still on the topic if there's a creature with protection from black like say {knight of infamy} does he live past a {black suns zenith}?

Read the protection list jester posted. Counters are not on it.

Yeah but aren't counters a form of damage like say an infect creature like {ichorclaw myr} dealing damage in -1/-1 counters?

but that's damage. counters done by infect is damage, counters unto themself however are just counters.

Infect reforms the way damage is delivered. The existance of infect and wither doesnt change how all the other counters out there behave. Now if {balefire dragon} had infect and sneezed on the board no counters would be placed because the counters are coming from a form of DAMAGE.

I think he dies in this scenario.  The counters are not damage.
