Title: Q&A Thread
Post by: Prophylaxis on August 27, 2012, 02:22:00 PM
In order to stem the large numbers of threads asking for basic questions, I've decided to put them all on here.

The purpose of this thread:

1. A "gathering place" to ask simple questions. No question is too dumb!
2. Reduce the amount of clutter and spam regarding new threads.
3. No rules questions. If you have them I kindly guide you over to our Rules Forum.

Ask away!

I'll ask the first question:

Is this a rules thread?

Whoops.

No, this isn't a rules thread. This is just a thread to ask simple questions not rules related.

{Boartusk Liege} and {Deus of Calamity} would be good places to start. {Runes of the Deus}

Another strategy is ramp. Use burn to get rid of early critters, then drop your bombs.

I am thinking of starting to play commander a bit.  I don't have many multi colored Legends, but that is what I want to use.  What do you guys think of {Vela the Night-Clad} as a general?

And is this what this thread is looking for?

Yep, you got it.

Vela is OK, but she feels so blunt to me. I like my multiplayer .politics., and Vela is just "do as it says on the tin". The mana cost is bad, too. I like {Sygg, River Cutthroat} a lot better.

Early game, just get a {Dimir Guildmage} or something like that out with Sygg, get your 3 damage in, draw your card. Then, late game, oh no, {Woodfall Primus} and a {Grave Titan} there - oh look, a {Kozilek, Butcher of Truth}! - Sygg falls below the radar allowing you to draw extra stuff. And inexperienced players can forget about Sygg entirely!

That kinda begs two questions.  For split mana like Sygg, does that count as a {U}{B} general or just straight {B} or straight {U}?  And, Woodfall Primus is green? :P

Also, thanks for the advice!  I believe I've actually seen Sygg pop up elsewhere too.  He definitely is something I may check out 

He counts as  a UB general.

Try both. With similar play styles, Sygg and Vela easily fit in the same deck. Try using each as a commander, see which you like better in that command zone, and either way the other one will be a welcome card in your deck.

It's like undying, but with -1/-1 instead of +1/+1

My friend is wants to make an {Animar, Soul of Elements} EDH. I said I'd throw a decklist together. Any ideas? I want my friend to get into EDH so I want his deck to be awesome, but he doesn't have a lot of money for cards.

Check out Clrnt8's, (or whatever he has for a name -_-), Dont wake Smaug deck and comments in casual, slumbering dragon deck so alot of counter adding. Its RG so all spells work.

This is kind of a goofy question.  I was looking at {su chi} on the database, and it says it's an Artifact Creature - Construct.
The actual card doesn't say "construct". Does this mean something?  Does it have some kind of rule affect?

It's like how {Lord of Atlantis} says "Summon Lord", yet his Oracle Text says something completely different. It's a retcon of an un-"Modern" card.

They recently (a year or two ago, I don't remember) the did a massive "Creature Type Update". They went through every creature ever printed and decided what creature types it should be. Most of the old artifact creatures never had a type, many types made no sense (if a creature's type was Sand People, that meant that Sand is a type and People is a type) or were specific to one creature only (see the original {Uncle Istvan}, he used to make {Mistform Ultimus} an uncle and that's just creepy. 😣).

Does anyone know the date of this?
