I pulled a {shimian spectre} today and at first glance I saw a 2/2 flyer with a pretty cool ability. When I looked it up it's worth like .60, why, is it the cost or something I'm not noticing?
What's cards that at first glance you've thought we're useful or great only to discover theyre almost useless.
If he was a 3/3 then he would be a lot better and see more play I'm sure. But 4 mana for a 2/2 is kinda paying just for the ability.
Because he swings turn 5. By that time I'd rather have a hero or a huntsmaster.
You're not getting a ton of value at 4CMC. The cost prohibits it from making an impact. It's only 2/2, and needs to deal combat damage to a player for its effect to work.
If it was say green instead of black, something that could use a mana ramp. Would it be more useful even as a 2/2.
You wanna try to get more value at 4 CMC then a 2/2 flyer thats difficult to race with. If he gave you card advantage you might consider it, but it doesn't even prevent top deck. It's not trash, but it reminds me of that {B} creature that takes control of a creature when it deals damage. I think it costs 5 mana and is almost unplayable because of it.

{soul seizer}? But it's blue...

He CAN give card advantage if he hits though.

{Fiend of the Shadows}. He doesn't do any of the things I described, but is unplayable none the less.
Soul seizer is probably my least favorite card of all time. It seems to actually work against the player who casts it because it has so many conditions that have to be met for it's effect to work at all.
Edit: btw I like shimian specter. I think someone could do well with a B/g discard deck that has some ramp in it. I always liked hand disruption, deck extraction, etc.
It's really only one condition: hit the player with a flier.
It's a {Mind Control} that isn't useless vs creatureless. Still not great.
He has a purpose post-{Surgical Extraction}, but {Surgical Extraction} is only really good against combo decks. Since it can swing on turn 5, which is when {Unburial Rites} would hit, it could be good? I'm not sold.
Back to OPs question, I thought {Wolfir Avenger} was better then it is, for some reason it's my least favorite creature to draw, and eventually just dumped him completely.
I thought Avenger would be good as a combat trick with Soulbond. 😒 No?
I still think he's above the curve.

He is above the curve, very playable. I never had a good experience with him, or any real use for him.
I run {wolfir avenger} in my deck too and lately I don't feel it does much. Besides the flash to block and then regen it isn't that helpful or does much in my deck so I might end up removing it also.
Im building a deck with him in a deck featuring {heartles summons} and {Havengul lich}. Getting him back for 3 mana each turn makes him a pesky problem for my opponents.
{Silent blade Oni} is a card I rarely play. By the time I can ninjutsu him in, the game is over.

Right? I rarely get vela or him out. Although it did win me a game once cuz i got to play an opponents Garruk ;D
The problem is he doesn't have haste.
