I feel like Legacy is somewhat of a neglected format. I wanted a place to discuss the meta and decks that you are seeing. If this is in the wrong place, mods can move.
What does everyone think is currently the best deck in the meta?
I currently think Merfolk is still the best. But sneak n' show (running {Show and Tell}) is very good.
I've been hearing about this deck called "Maverick", and saw an episode of "Inside the Deck" (highly recommended). It hasn't appeared in my meta yet. Supposedly it's a good deck.
All I know of legacy is that there are two distinct types of legacy players in my meta the ultra competitive and the budget competitive. There is no skill difference really, but it does show how much money and time you put in to this. that being said I do take donations from anyone getting out of the game who was into legacy :p
From what I have seen my meta is control and burn. Nobody was using merfolk or show and hide at all.
(I just started legacy though)
Show and tell with omniscience ruins my day. Elves everywhere, Merfolk, lockdown decks is what I see
I've seen
Sneak and Show w/ {Omniscience}
Merfolk- Pretty Strait forward
Elves- same
Goblins- same
Maverick- Using things like exalted, Enchantments and {Dueling Grounds} to continually swing with one strong protected creature
U/W Control- Exactly what title says.
Im interested in playing against a Maverick deck in person. I still don't know how it works, it's like a mid-range zoo deck or something? All the creatures have activated abilities, it's weird.
{Knight of the Reliquary} to tutor lands, lots of ground power to stomp aggro, enough redundancy to bypass Control. The only thing it doesn't stomp it Sneak Show, because that's a combo deck. {mother of runes} and {Scavanging Ooze}
Maybe I'll build one, when I get tired of Merfolk.

Uses {Knight of the Reliquary} and {Scavening Ooze} to make threats. Cards like {Gaddock Teeg} and {Thalia, Guardian of Thraben} for control. {Mother of Runes} and {Maze of Ith} protect your dudes.
{Green Sun's Zenith} to tutor stuff, amazing deck reach and lots of redundancy. It seems like fun, but combo decks like Storm and Dredge probably wreck it. I don't know if I should do a {U}/{W} Stoneblade or Maverick. Maverick seems like the flavor of the month, where Stoneblade is a better investment.

{Nobel Heirarch}, {Canopy Cover}.
Ultimately, Maverick beats Stoneblade, but loses to combo matchups like Storm, Sneak Show and Dredge. But those combo matchups can't beat Stoneblade. I'd say Legacy has a pretty healthy meta.
Wizards is not quick with the ban hammer like they do with modern, and several months a deck will be super popular, then go away when something more favorable takes over.

My elf deck owns stoneblade. I'll win before they can get a batterskull out.

Elves are a combo deck of sorts. Any deck that can go off turn 3 or 4 beats Stoneblade.

I think that has mostly to do with the fact that Mordern is still such a new format.
Legacy wont ever truly be popular because of the upfront costs in competing. My deck, the way I built it, is nearly $1,500 (because of the Dual and Fetchlands). That is "cheap" for Merfolk. Sneak Show, Maverick, StoneBlade are just more expensive. They also represent Tier 1 for Legacy.
Sorry, to clarify, I meant that the reason they are ban-happy in Modern is the newness factor. Players and WotC are still learning what's OP and what's acceptable. As the dynamics shift, bans may get lifted.
Legacy is more stable. (Stable =/= stagnant IMO).
Legacy I don't see as stagnant. Maverick is a newer deck, it's burst onto the scene is bringing back older combo decks. If anything, Legacy might have the "original" balance of Aggro, Combo, Control.
Is there a place to go to see deck lists for these decks you are talking about? I enjoy magic, but standard is too expensive to keep up with and would like to slim it down a bit. I know it's more to get into legacy, but a good legacy card is a good card overall, but some standard cards are overpriced for what they do simply because they are standard legal.

I agree with you, but maverick is not a newer deck. It is being played more though. The lates new deck is show/hide. I love legacy. I can play so many different decks. Dredge, reamimator, Esper Stoneblade, RUG Delver, Maverick, and Death and Taxes to name just a very few.
I personally like to play combo decks like High Tide and Ad Nauseam.

what about Modern?
There is not a huge following for it at my LGS but I may ask around.

This link is for standard but there are tabs for legacy and modern.
Legacy from my experience has the most diverse meta from one place to the next. I have a natural order/ progenitus deck I've been tweaking ever since it was a secret order deck. Where I live I have won many legacy tournaments with it because combo isn't huge here. But I went one province over to Calgary and all I saw was combo decks and no aggro because noone had control decks. It's my favorite format because of that
I agree. I only play Legacy but at multiple locations in multiple states and the meta is always different. I usually run Burn, or a version of countertop based on how much aggro/control/combo i see at a meta. Legacy has such a wide variety of decks that can do well; Maverick, Merfolk, Elves, Burn, CounterTop variants, Threshold variants, Reanimator, Bant, ANT, Affinity, DeathNTaxes, Goblins, MUC, Painter, SneakShow, Dredge, etc, etc...
