Different cards. Sometimes they reprint cards though. Basically in "Standard" format you can only play with cards from the most recent sets, but older sets sometimes have super-expensive cards like {Black Lotus}.

I think i might know what op is talking about. My local comic book store sells old packs of magic cards cant remember if he had alpha or beta. But what they do is they buy them from an under ground printing company he sells them like $15 dollars i belive ill have to check again.
