That's the eternal question, and there are basic tips but there is a lot to consider in deck building. You can check the thread Soon to Be... for some tips for getting started.

This article series (ReConstructed) is good for deck building fundamentals:

There are different ways to build decks, and different formats to build them in. Learning the type of player you are is important.

I standard i like control, so most of my decks are heavy removal and more mid-range aggro. Legacy is a fast format so you gotta get all your power on the board as try to win by turn 5 or 6.

What i usually do is find a combo (or make one), a card, or a theme to build around. You can also look at other people's decks, and then build off of those for ideas.
Try looking through combos, and if you find one you like, try building a casual deck around it. For standard, theres not as many combos, so I usually build off someone elses idea, or build it around a card or group of cards.

This!  SOOO this!  Check the "What player type are you?" in Fun section (I think)

There different play styles (Combo, Agrressive, Control, Midrange... And combinations of these) but also different player types defined by what they like about the game (Spikes like winning at all costs, Timmies like big splashy monsters and crazy effects, blah blah blah)

Knowing what attracts you to the game can save a lot of frustration. Timmies can get put off at competitive events, Spikes can get annoyed by people not taking the game seriously. Like ya do.

My advice is: mess around with a few decks online or using combos of you and some of your friends cards(just make sure to give them back lol) and find out what kind of player you are how you like to set up on the feild and then go out and trade or buy a deck that explains you as a magic player it sucks when you spend a crap ton of money on a deck then hate it so just find a style you like and go for it good luck young planeswalker
