It used to be that you'd have until the end of the turn before you lost. That was in the ancient times of pre-Sixth edition, when cavemen roamed with Moxen around their necks in Bands. Hehehehe 😁
Yea, you lose when you phase changes or when you ask your opponent if they have a response. Damn state based.
