Title: Stupid shock land question
Post by: Silent1236 on August 15, 2012, 05:00:52 PM
So, what makes them so great?  I know this is just something really easy that I'm missing.  I just don't understand what makes them so incredibly valuable and sought-after.  What makes losing life to play a land good?

They give you the option of coming into play tapped or not. They aren't as conditional as other dualies. So essentially, you wouldnt have to wait a turn for the full use of a dualie.

Also shock land just sounds badass.

Plus they count as the basic land types (island swamp, etc)

{watery grave}

So using {far seek} in standard currently..you can grab only basic lands.

When shock lands drop, yøū will be able to pull ^^ because its type is island swamp

THIS!!!

An {Arid Mesa} can get your {Hallowed Fountain} or {Blood Crypt}.

Your {Stomping Ground} buffs your {Dungrove Elder}, activates your {Anger}, and makes {Flinthoof Boar} bigger.

Edit:  Also, it give you control over whether you want it untapped or not.  If you don't need the mana right away, leave it tapped.  If it's going to give you the game, pay the life.

Yea the basic subtype is huge.  But the conditional pay 2 life is awesome too.  Honestly I think fetch lands are more important.  But part of the power with fetch lands is that you can fetch shock lands ;)

Fetch, shock, question applied the same.  I suppose I wouldn't have had to ask if I had used them before.  I've had 1 fetch land, that's it.  It sounds like they could be awesome if used together.

It is because of the shock lands that cards like {wild nacatl} was banned from modern.

They're just awesome. Though in my hubris, I once played a shock land untapped, at 4 life, played my "game winning spell" with it, got canceled, next turn, sign in blood. Instant sad face...

On turn 2 it can be a 3/3 unless you mean total turns

It's the same reason why delver is so good.

They require no additional card to be played.

Delver goes from a t1 1/1 t2 reveal turning it into 3/2 flier.

{kird are} gets played t1 and as long as its played by a shock land or forest and mountain in play it gets the buff. No additional cards required to buff it.

Parish requires a t2 gather which is another spell.

It's all about card advantage.
